Noob to GPU overclocking, stable recommendations for Gaming X RX 480

QuantumBlink

Hey all, any recommendations for stable OCs on an MSI Gaming X RX 480 8GB? It's factory clock is 1310 MHz. I don't know much about GPU overclocking so some tips would also be appreciated.

First option: I would go into afterburner (software) and max out voltage and power target/limit. Then I would bump the clockspeeds by 50mhz and test if it is stable, repeat until unstable, roll back.

Second option: Don't touch the voltage or power target, rest just like option 1.

Third option: Increase power target, but not voltage, rest like option 1.

By stable how do I check if it's stable?

Many people use benchmarks, but the best way would be to test it in games that you play. If everything runs smoothly, then you're fine. If there are crashes, freezes, or any other funky stuff popping up on your screen, then you'll want to dial back the overclock.

Good suggestion with the games. However you should try a variety of them. I had my gpu undevolted for a long time and it was fine. Bought deus ex, 10 minutes in and it crashed. Easy to reproduce, but only in deus ex.  So yeah, use demanding titles and as many as possible.

PC: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @4.2HGhz 1.25V || Noctua NH-U12S SE2 || 16GB (2×8GB) Aegis 3000Mhz CL16 @3200Mhz ||
|| Sapphire Pulse RX 6700 10G || MSI B450i Gaming PLUS MAX Wifi
  || Kingston NV1 2TB m.2 ||  Corsair SF600 || Intertech IM 1 |||
Peripherals: Sennheiser PC  360 G4ME || AOC CQ27G2U || Viewsonic PX701HD || Keychron V1 || Logitech G303 Shroud Edition||| Laptop: XPS 13 2in1 7390 || Steam Deck 256 GB (64GB Version) ||| Cameras: Fujifilm XH-1 || Fujifilm X100T

I don't think it's about how demanding a game is. For me, I had my GPU undervolted and it worked fine in most games i have and then crashes in cs:go (almost costing me a game).

The 480 is a pretty hot GPU with little headroom for overclocking on the stock coolers. Not worth the heat to pull 1-2 fps. My sapphire 480 runs about 70- 80*c (depending on game) with no oc and fan curve running just high enough to keep it at that temp without being stupid loud.

That's untrue for my card. It stays cool very easily.

No, no no no, no. 20mhz increments is much better on a 480

I use 10. I ordered a define mini c. The better temps should help me a lot. Btw, what driver are you on?

Still haven't oc'd my rx 480 rs.  But when benching it the highest temps I saw was 67c.  Guess I got a good card.  Even though I'm not sure I should OC it till I get a better motherboard.
