In terms of performance, yes. But I am not sure about the price....

why not. if they price the same but offer overclocking and have  a cheaper platform, there will be an incentive to buy amd and they will become competitive again

apparently at high setting the cpu is not a bottleneck

Hello,

I'd pick the RX480, especially if you have or are considering getting a variable refresh rate monitor, since Freesync monitors are much cheaper than their G-sync counterparts.

that's because free sync is software based

the gtx 1060 3gb version is a cut down version of the gtx 1060 6gb so a rx 480 4gb would outperform basically across the board.

true and I'd get the 1050ti with a 6pin connector over the 3gb 1060 due to that. especially if he's upgrading within 2 years

I'm going from a 1060 to an Rx 480 for my Freesync monitor and I want to keep the card for a while, and 480 seems to pull ahead on newer DX12 titles. Also the Gaming X I'm getting fits my build theme :P.

Honestly both are great cards and you won't be disappointed. 1060 is very capable for 1440 unless you have some OCD compulsion to play at everything absolute max

That's an F in the profile pic
