Any "extra stress" it does add is negligible and it'll probably die of "natural causes" before the "extra stress" does anything.

Id go 1x16 personally, but it won't make a difference.

also, i find that 4x4 is better because if one dies then I'll have 12gb left compare to 2x8 if one dies I'll have 8gb left.

ram doesn't fail often so thats not really a problem.

2x8gb is the best choice if you're looking to get the highest clock rates out of your cpu and or ram.  It also leaves the ability to upgrade to 32gb in the future.
