Xeon E3-1245 v5 vs i7 6700k

It's hard to say that one of the two is better than the other. But here's a couple things you should know:

 

- The Xeon E3-1245 v5 supports ECC memory but requires a workstation chipset motherboard (C232 or C236) to work.

- The most important reason to look at Xeon instead of i7 is price. The E3-1230 v5 is the same but no integrated GPU, and costs around $100 less than the i7 in the US.

- The i7-6700K will allow overclocking if that's what you want. That said it also doesn't come with a cooler of its own, you'll have to buy one.

 

Those are pretty much the only differences (apart from a bit higher stock clockspeed on the 6700K). I would choose a 1230 v5 if you're tight on budget, or if your workload benefits from ECC memory.

i would go for the i7 6700k its better than the Xeon unless you use its special features.
