If your wallet can afford it go with the latter...those components will last you longer and you won't feel the need to upgrade as quickly which should, in theory, save you money in the long run. That's the attitude I had with my current build going on four years ago, and I have no need to upgrade even now. Just one man's opinion though.

Going on four years. It debuted in 2014 I think and I got it close after launch. I rounded up, forgive me. Three years it is then.

EDIT: Holy hell I was mistaken again! 2015! Wow. I am off my meds. Going on TWO YEARS, my apologies

I would say that too. Take a GTX 1070 with a cheap good Custom design (Price / Performance), and take the 1440p / 144 Hz Monitor, but pls, get one with GSync.

If you have enough money for a GTX 1070 or 1080, you HAVE enough money for a 1440p Monitor, Period. there is no excuse for still getting a low res 1080p Monitor ^^

Much sharper, less flimmering textures, and much more usable space in Desktop mode.

And.. If the Monitor has GSync, you won't need 144 fps at all just to not have tearing or stuttering. Gsync on 144 Hz is a must have in my Opinion

Yup, the specs look fine.

Theck out the Dell S2417DG as it also has 1440p @ 24", and 165 Hz GSync.

I think, i would take the cheaper of those 2 :)

GTX 980 --> +35% --> GTX 1070 --> +20-25%~ --> GTX 1080.

If it's +10-15 fps more, that depends how much fps you get with 1070. If you get 130 fps, the 1080 will deliver more than just 10% more ^^

However, going from an 980 to 1070 might not be such a biiig upgrade. I think i would keep the 980, untill it really is too slow for you. THEN upgrade.

i would try to find a 27'' version of a similar monitor...unless this one is really cheap or something...24'' is a bit small for 1440p IMHO.

GTX 1080 is roughly 20% faster than a GTX 1070...GTX 1070 is like my 980ti in performance and i have no issues playing my games on ultra with some sort of anti-aliasing (not maxed obviously 1440p need a whole lot less AA than 1080p anyways) other settings maxed i get easily 80 to 100FPS in just about any games...BF1 ULTRA around 90FPS for example...and with Gsync anything above 75hz is butter smooth already. I would go with a nicer monitor and a GTX 1070 personally...anyways that extra performance will look like nothing in less than 2 years GPU performance increase so much each generations IMHO it's not a good investement you better buy something a bit less expensive and upgrade more often IMHO.

Speaking from experience, a 1070 with 144hz shows little problems with fps. What games will you be playing?

Nothing.

there are no 27" around here in my country with these specs. now i have 23" and im fine with that, so 24" is okay.

so you suggest 1070 and monitor instead of 1080?

control panel and it will work in every game...but you don't even have to do anything nvidia driver will detect a gsync monitor and activate it on it's own it's seemless and flawless.

Depends on what's you think having a larger monitor is gonna do for you. Already having several 120hz 1080's, going to 144hz 1440 wasn't a big improvement. Actually a restriction compared to running surround for so long.

I can't compare two different resolutions for you. The refresh rate has nothing to do with it at this point. Better picture quality is what the 1440 offers. Only thing that comes to mind for me.

Also less frames, so unless the game is old or isn't aaa you won't be see 144 frames anway. Could barely touch that on 1080p with my gtx 1080.

I agree with this. I have a 1070 and a ROG Swift (1440p 144Hz monitor) and it's a great pairing. I run all games on Ultra settings and am able to average 100+fps. I will add that I usually drop the AA to FXAA in most games since it will bump the performance and you don't need much AA at 1440p.

For 1080p you have a lot of options to max everything out and hit 100+fps.

really think so with 1440p 144hz and gtx 1070? i mean i'm not ultra setting freak. i can play a step below with shadows off, motion blur off, AA down etc... my gtx 970 in another system is hiting 75 avg fps in six siege at 1440p
