Purple Perfection update ($8k Budget)

*My old thread for my $8k budget build isn't providing updated information and people are making outdated replies to it so I decided to just make a new thread with a better format & system to allow me to better update.

CPU:

  • Chosen CPU: i7-6850k
  • Reasoning behind this: Multiple cores, and more PCI-E lanes than i7-6800k

CPU Cooler:

  • Chosen cooler: Kraken x62
  • Reasoning behind this: Performs well, pretty quiet, RGB; plus I am planning to do push/pull on it

Motherboard:

  • Chosen mobo: Asus Strix x99 Gaming
  • Reasoning behind this: Cheapest RGB Mobo I could find, WiFi, Intel LAN, M.2 support, etc.

RAM:

  • Chosen RAM: 2x G.Skill TridentZ RGB 2x8GB DDR4-2400
  • Reasoning behind this: RGB, I don't need a high ram overclock

Storage:

  • Chosen drive(s): Samsung 960 Evo 1TB
  • Reasoning behind this: Fast, made by reliable SSD manufactor, more than enough storage to last me a while, $200 cheaper than 960 Pro

Video cards:

  • Chosen GPU(s): 2x Asus 1080 Strix
  • Reasoning behind this: Cheaper than Titan XP(don't even mention getting a Titan XP), RGB, 3 fan cooler.

Case:

  • Chosen case: Corsair Air 740
  • Reasoning behind this: Only uses USB 3.0 ports(no useless 2.0), high amount of locations for fans

PSU:

  • Chosen PSU: EVGA G3 850W
  • Reasoning behind this: Reliable PSU, Gold rating, high wattage for overclocking

Monitor:

  • Chosen monitor: Predator x34
  • Reasoning behind this: G-Sync, High resolution, High refresh rate, IPS

Keyboard:

  • Chosen keyboard: Corsair Strafe RGB
  • Reasoning behind this: RGB, Good reviews for it

Mouse:

  • Chosen mouse: Corsair M65 PRO RGB FPS
  • Reasoning behind this: RGB, Good reviews for it

Speakers:

  • Chosen speakers: Razer Leviathan
  • Reasoning behind this: Good reviews

Case fans:

  • Chosen case fan(s): 2x 3-Pack NZXT Aer RGB 140mm
  • Reasoning behind this: Same manufacturer as the Kraken x62, 140mm for adding on to the Kraken and case itself, good reviews, RGB

If you have some spare money in the Future for a new cpu and cooler i would get a Core I7-6950x cooled with a NZXT Kraken if you a 10 core fan :)

Predator x34 is overclocked to 100hz not native...

Wait you're gonna SLI 1080 for a 1440p ultrawide 100hz?

I'm not sure about that, maybe get 2 ultrawides.

Getting more monitors in the future.

It's a $2k CPU in Canada, I don't see the point of getting it because it won't benefit me that much.

Don't you think the Corsair Air 740 looks really bad?

I mean you don't need that much of space... a NZXT S340, H440 and Noctis 450 have enough room for air and cables...

Whatever, I guess taste is subjective.

(Don't forget NZXT Hue+)

I like the look of it though. H440 is the only one of those cases I actually like that you listed.

It's not bought which is why it's the planning section. And I forgot to add your question to the OP.

  • Those two drives cost $110 more than the one drive 1TB drive.
  • That PSU is over $30 more & 200W more than I'll need.
  • The RAM you choose is RED LED, not RGB. I am going for a purple/RGB build, not a red one.

1. in raid 0, you add the 2 drive capacity's to see how much storage you have, so the $110 more is for around twice as fast storage

2. its $30 more for alot more future proofing, a higher efficency rating(so you save a bit on your power bill) and more head room to overclock

3. didnt know, its updated now

  1.  Higher chance of drive failure, so that's out the window for me. Plus these things already go super fast so I don't think raid is justified
  2. You don't really save a lot and I don't think I'll use 200Ws in an overclock.

Its the 960 pro, it is very uncommon to have a drive error

It just came out & it's expensive af so ofc there's going to be little chance of/no one reporting drive errors.

I would just stick with a single SSD to be honest. You are paying an extra $120 or so just for raid. You are probably not going to notice any real world difference either.

Some quick questions before I post a slightly revised parts list.

What games will you be playing?

How important are file transfer times?

Is your case choice final? How much do you want to show off your build?

Is your heart set on that monitor?

Would you like higher performance fans or RGB?

Why do you want SLI?

Games:

  • Minecraft
  • GTA V
  • DOOM
  • Others depending on what I like from Steam; don't know because my current computer is too weak

File transfers/speed:

  • I code a lot and I max out my HDD for about 5 minutes loading my huge amount of projects; plus my friend's SSD takes 2 minutes to load them. Plus they save a lot and read/write a lot from multiple locations because I usually host my projects and have my friends help develop it, so very valuable to be faster than MX300.
  • Mass video files that transfer to different storage drives (1080P videos ~10-20 minutes long)
  • General gameloading would be nice with the 960 PRO

Case:

  • I chose it because I like the look, has USB 3.0 and no USB 2.0s, good airflow, and good size. If you want to recommend another I'd recommend hitting the last three above.

Monitor:

  • I love the x34.

RGB/Performance:

  • I am trying to strike a balance. I don't mind giving up a little performance for some RGB.

SLI:

  • Better FPS and more monitors coming soon

SLI:

I would suggest sticking with one GPU until you actually get more than one monitor. I would also suggest a multi-monitor setup as they are a lot nicer than one screen when it comes to multi tasking (ie streaming game-play over Twitch and being able to monitor the chat feed). For a multi-monitor setup I would suggest a build like the one I will include. I also dropped the 960 Pro to an Evo as the performance dip is negligible and with the price reduction I was able to fit in an additional 1TB SSD. I included two 27" 1440p monitors with the ASUS monitor for a primary gaming monitor due to its 165Hz refresh rate and both are IPS.

Tried to stick as close as possible to original specs but I dropped the second 1080 because one should be fine in theory and leaves the SLI upgrade as a future option as I am a big advocate for not spending more than you need to. (sorry for letting my somewhat thrifty nature get the better of me)

I am a big advocate for buying it all at once so I don't have to spend more money down the line in-case I don't have it later on.

Well, I currently have two spare 24'' 1080P monitors which is why I went for the x34. Also, I am a bit OCD when it comes to things like monitors.

Ah, should've mentioned that I went for 960 Pro because of the 1.2 PBW warranty; thinking of it now, I could just get a 1TB 960 EVO, and then get the PCIe to M.2 that @IHirs suggested and get a 1TB/2TB 960 Pro later on if I need it.

  • Reasoning behind this: Cheaper than Titan XP(don't even mention getting a Titan XP), RGB, 3 fan cooler.

Case:

  • Chosen case: Corsair Air 740
  • Reasoning behind this: Only uses USB 3.0 ports(no useless 2.0), high amount of locations for fans

PSU:

  • Chosen PSU: EVGA G3 850W
  • Reasoning behind this: Reliable PSU, Gold rating, high wattage for overclocking

Monitor:

  • Chosen monitor: Predator x34
  • Reasoning behind this: G-Sync, High resolution, High refresh rate, IPS

  • Chosen keyboard: Corsair Strafe RGB
  • Reasoning behind this: RGB, Good reviews for it

  • Chosen mouse: Corsair M65 PRO RGB FPS
  • Reasoning behind this: RGB, Good reviews for it

Speakers:

  • Chosen speakers: Razer Leviathan
  • Reasoning behind this: Good reviews

Case fans:

  • Chosen case fan(s): 2x 3-Pack NZXT Aer RGB 140mm
