Reduce temps

I stress test my CPU using Prime95 for about 15 minutes, and saw temps reaching 90 degrees. I'm wandering anything I could do to get better cooling?

Build info:

CPU: intel core i7-6700k

cooler: Noctua NH-U14s (using one fan)

case: fractal design define s

case fans: fractal design define s stock case fans

make sure theres enough air going in to the case to provide the cpu cooler with enough air. did you apply enough thermal paste? and not too much?

also skylake tends to run quite hot on aircooling when overclocked but 90 degrees is a bit hot IMO.

CPU Temp.PNG

it wasn't under load when I took the screen shot, but those are the temps it reached during the test. I haven't even overclocked yet.

Voltages are way higher what they should be. It shows 1.42V for load. It should be something like 1.27-.29V at auto and stock. Does this happen with other stress tests too? You can also limit voltage by manual to 1.15-.20V.

1.42 is just what the processor wants, not what it gets. @prostrike33 needs to show and tell what the manual voltage he set and what his VRMs are outputting (hence why i asked for a VCORE screenshot, which he did not supply).

UNDER LOAD PLEASE. I'm specifically looking to see what your LLC is doing under load.

CPU Temp 2.PNG

Voltages under load. It wasn't under load for long (literally seconds) so the value temps are low. But the max temp was from the first test I performed after reapplying thermal paste and changing my CPU cooler placement to push air to the back of the case

Prime95 is known to push your CPU (and motherboard) extremely hard as it demands an unrealistic amount of power from both. The normal temps should never begin to approach what you see during a P95 test since it is typically at or beyond the worst case scenario. In some cases P95 can actually shorten the life the components it's testing (it killed one of my motherboards).

P95 is unrealistically heavy on the cpu. Try another program like OCCT instead.

1.4v is also pretty high you should either lower it or increase fan speeds for better temps.

There's your problem -- by leaving it on Auto, AND RUNNING PRIME95, your Core Voltage is going up MUCH higher than what is needed.

Your CPU is requesting for a high of 1.421V, and it is receiving 1.408V.

1.42V could  net you a pretty heavy overclock on your i7-6700K...

VCore voltages. You should always use manual when overclocking. And most of the time its recommended to use manual mode when running heavier CPU stress tests like P95.

Haven't overclocked yet (though i plan to later on). So what voltage should be set for base clock, or should it be on auto?

You can have it auto when not running stress tests. You can also try with some other stress test, like Aida64, Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility or OCCT and see how it reacts. But in general, you shouldn't have auto on when running heave stress tests.

Base Voltage will vary a little bit from one CPU to another, but to start, set it to ~1.2V.

Run the stress test, and check your temperatures again.

On a z170-a motherboard, I would set the voltage in the bios right?

Yes, you make the setting change in the BIOS -- you should be doing ALL your changes in the BIOS.

Set 'AI Overclock Tuner' to [XMP].

Set 'CPU Core Voltage' to [Manual Mode].

For 'CPU Core Voltage Override' enter '1.200'.

Save changes and reboot.
