That's not how RAM works. If your system is using 6GB of RAM, there will be no performance difference between having 8GB or 16GB installed, as only 6GB of it is being used.

For gaming and general use, 8GB is enough for most people. For heavy multi-tasking and more production based applications, 16GB may be useful.

In the event that you run out of RAM capacity (ie. having 8GB installed but the system wants to use 12GB), your system will slow to a crawl as it has to use the page file

I noticed no difference. The only application that I use that goes over 8GB of ram is Cities:Skylines.

In fact, I thing that 4GB is perfectly acceptable for general computing.

i currently have 8 gb in my crappy pc and 1.10 modded minecraft i have to use over 4gb of ram for it to be stable :( then my system lags like a bish cause i run out of memeory

just watch your RAM usage while playing. If it hits near 100% then upgrade. If it is below 90% then you are fine

Depends on what you do. General usage will work with 4gb. Gaming will be fine with 8gb. Something else justifiable, like using After Effects, would work with 16gb. 16gb is really unnecessary if you're just going to be gaming, unless you're playing something like Rust/City Skylines.

Nothing.

Hey guys could someone tell me what the speed difference would be if I got 16 gb of ram vs8. Wondering what the difference of the computer performance would be

No speed changes unless you run into limits. That drasticly results in negative performance. 8 Is acceptable, but with 16 you will have plenty unless you have special RAM depending tasks. Gaming does not fall under that.

For more info on how RAM works check my guide.

I have a computer with 4GB, 8GB and 16GB.

There's little difference between the 4GB and 8GB in daily use.

I never noticed a difference between 8GB and 16GB when gaming or anything like that either.

I'd just get 8GB. You can always upgrade if you find you need more, it's probably the easiest upgrade there is.

Some seriously wrong information in this thread. Its to bad, this is the way every PC forum goes. People injecting their opinions with no real world tests. So here you go OP

Turns out it does make a difference! whether the added performance is worth it to you or not is entirely up to you.

Stop listening to kids on the forums though.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work

Hey what do you know. another video that proves ram DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE even when you are not exceeding your installed ram

Why does it work that way? I'm not going to explain it cause there is a plethora of information out there explaining why it makes  difference, already available.

Hope this helps OP.
