Hi every one i'm new to the forums and looking into getting a surround sound head set but i'm not sure if i need to get a sound card or if a DAC is enough to make it surround sound possible. I just watched to video on you tube with Linus on NCIX's channel and i still don't understand

Don't bother with surround sound, it's shit. It muffles audio and makes stuff harder to hear, as well as makes music and content sound different.

Get a decent headset like ATH-M50X

idk

What? There are much better open-backed cans that do a much better job at spatial awareness and soundstage.

@travis121 what is your budget?

Decent. Not amazing. I'm just saying one example, not saying 'omg it's insane buy these'.

It doesn't help if you call OP's initial idea "shit". Because i'm pretty sure a few of those headsets will provide better surround than a closed-back, mobile set of cans will ever do.

If you're not going for aesthetics and don't have roommates -> open-backed headphones offer the best spatial awareness and soundstage for your money. And also perform well outside of this task.

If you're going for aesthetics (Shiney LED's, Bright colors -> LAN-party's) and/or have roommates -> headsets can offer decent surround, but are generally inadequate for anything other than this (music).

Closed back headphones are just only good for music on the go, or if you prefer bass in your music. You don't buy them with gaming in mind.

There are two kinds of surround sound. Ones that fake it in software and ones that have multiple speakers. Ive had both and I didn't like them. One of them had multiple 3.5mm plugs that I could put straight into motherboard surround sockets

Whats your budget and what genre of music do you generally listen to?

A good open back headphone will easily emulate the "surround" sound experience without the gimmicky software or hardware those gaming headsets offer as compensation for the lack of sound quality and "gaming" name.

While I agree, the M50X has a narrow sound stage and are more for studio/production use, more so than other headphones.

There is a pinned thread in this section you could take a look at and get an idea of what's available. My personal recommendation is to get a pair of open back headphones if you will be in an environment that you won't bother people around you while you play games. There are some headphones that won't require any extra amplification that you wouldn't find in your typical PC motherboard and such, like the Philips SHP9500 (an "entry level" open back headphone) or something similar.

Here's the thread, though:

You should also take a look here:

When audio posts about surround sound get posted I generally don't read every post as it quickly gets convoluted and I don't feel like putting in the effort. I'd rather give my two cents based on your title and opening post.

But I did suggest open backs if you're in the proper environment, not you should totally get this no if ands or buts about it. :P
