Pentium D vs Celeron

Today, we have 2 contestants.

 

Intel Pentium D @ 3.2 GHz Dual Core

 

vs.

 

Intel Celeron @ 2.4 GHz Dual Core

 

Advantages of Pentium D:

-Higher clockspeed

-4 MB of Cache over 1MB of Cache

 

Advantages of Celeron:

-Much lower TDP (130W<65W)

-Newer Manufacturing Process (65nm<45nm)

 

Both of these would be an  improvement over what I have now, a Pentium T2370 (1.73GHz Dual Core which got the 4th lowest cinebench r15 score of all submissions on the forum)

 

Also, Performance > Efficiency. I have a decent cooler to cool it.

The Celeron, Wolfdale flogs the shit out of Netburst even with over a 1GHz clock speed difference. Also:

Pentium D: useable but quite unpleasant 

 

Wolfdale Celeron: if storage is no bottleneck, this is plenty for casual use.

The "advantage" of the clock speed is subjective as an architecture could be substantially worse than another, and therefore will probably perform much worse.

Pentium D has two gens, 800 and 900. 900 will be the better option.

That's especially the case with anything Netburst. My Pentium M770 (2.13GHz) just manages to beat these Pentium 4:

• Pentium 4 HT 3.2GHz (Northwood)
• Pentium 4 540J 3.2GHz (Prescott)
• Pentium 4 631 (Cedarmill, 65W version)

And that's with the same memory bandwidth.

The Celeron would always perform better, considering Wolfdale has an IPC is higher than that of Dothan-which beats Netburst with hyper threading enabled+clocked 1GHz higher.

Newer Celeron will perform better than a extremely old gen Pentium. When they are part of the same family, then of course Pentium will have the better performance.

This is just like i3 vs i5.  All people see is the name and clock speed, completely ignoring other factors.  There's plenty of overlap across generations.

1. That's still voting strictly on the name.
2. It says Pentium D in the question.  That's a clear indicator that there was a mistake somewhere.

Let's be honest, the poll would still be skewed in the Pentium's favor even if it was labelled properly.

Nope. This is just a little build I'm doing for my friend and I found 2 systems for free. Hard drive was toast on both of them. So these are the chips I got from them.

I suppose. Not many people here would remember the days of overclocking the shit out of a Celeron, and getting the performance of a top-of-the-line Pentium for less than half the price.
