Where to from here? A learning experience

Hello, LTT members! I would like to start by thanking you all for the help/advice I have gotten here over the past year. I am a high school student who became interested in computers about five years ago. In those years, my knowledge of PC's and OS'es has grown a lot, and I have enjoyed learning about hardware and software alike. However, in the past year or so, my quest for computing related knowledge has become stagnant. I built my own desktop and enjoyed doing so, and I am more familiar than ever with windows 10. Now that I understand the basic components of PCs and navigating operating systems, I want to go further. So now I present my question: Where do I go next? I am looking at building a career from this hobby, and I want to know where I can start anew, and continue learning. Any suggestions of what to pursue next, and how to do it are greatly appreciated.

The best way I learn is with problems. Do a project that you know you will have to look things up on and you will hit problems and learn from it

I was in a similar position as you when I came out of high school. I felt like I knew it all and there was no room to grow and I didn't know what else there was to do. There are SO MANY fields in the computer industry. You need to find out what interests you. You could network with enterprise-grade switches. You can program applications. You can learn Servers to be a System Administrator. The possibilities are endless. HOWEVER, nowadays, you aren't getting most of those without going to college and that would be your first step. Don't rush things too much, life is going to hit you hard, as long as you know where you are going and you love what you are doing, you'll do fine. If you are still in high school, then just study up on some books. Any questions, I would be happy to answer.

For the most part, the A+ certification is something of a waste of time and resources other than for reading. I wouldn't take the test because any job that requires you to have it nowadays is going to pay for you to take the test. That being said there aren't many jobs that ask you to have it. It's like going to get certified for your MCSE, which at one point was a very admirable feat.

I second that. I had a similar phase and because my family asked me to, I build a NAS for them. This introduced me to a complete new realm of technologie and from there I started many more projects. :)

Where I live there are plenty of jobs that will only let you apply if you are already certified.

You can't just say you want to "build a career" based on just liking computers. That's like saying "I like sports, so now decide which sport I should start training and become a pro in".

 

What aspect of computers do you want to work with? Programming? Networking? Consulting? Project manager? Security? UX Designer? Web developer? Databases? Sales? Support? Administration?

The different jobs all require different sets of skills and knowledge.

Sales and supports sounds like Geeksquad or something like that (unless you mean enterprise sales and support). You don't really need to study to get that kind of job. Just know the basics and have a friendly personality will be enough. The general knowledge will come naturally if you're just interested and curious.

 

I think you should aim for something higher than Geeksquad though, and "good jobs" often require some degree of specialization.
