Server Memory

I found what I believe to be a good deal on RAM. I could get 8gb for 33$ but it says server memory. Is server memory any different than regular ram.

Unless you use a xeon and a server /workstation board then it will not work. It is ecc registered. Oh and even for server memory that is expensive

it's ECC ram, i'm not sure on how ECC memory reacts when you pair it with a cpu and/or mobo that doesnt support it, but i'd say it's not worth the effort.

 

besides, if you want to upgrade ram in the future, for as much as i dont mind recommending mix&match setups, i dont recommend mix&matching that stuff with anything else

It isn't registered. It's unbuffered non-ECC.

Guaranteed as far as RAM goes. Registered will not work as the pin-outs are different.

I have tried registered ddr3 ecc on A desktop bore and other didn't work. If just get desktop ram. Also 30 bucks for 8 gb us way overpriced it should be around 15 max.

The pin-outs are different. Most consumer boards use unbuffered RAM and registered/buffered RAM will not work with those slots.

 

ECC on the other hand comes on both buffered/registered and unbuffered sticks, thus able to work on any board as long as the slots are compatible though you may lose ECC function if the CPU and chipset don't use/allow ECC.
