Steam will allow you to stay in offline mode for as long as you like

TopWargamer

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/11/04/steam-client-should-allow-you-to-run-in-offline-mode-for-as-long-as-you-like-say-valve/

I'm on my phone so I can't quote the article.

I'm surprised it took Valve this long to implement this. I mean, even before, Steam's online DRM was reasonable...couldn't stay offline for more than what, a week or 2? And I only remember actually using offline mode once...and that was 2 years ago.

Thoughts on Valve getting rid of its 'always on' DRM?

a friend of mine only has internet once a month when I go to my parents house and he comes over to visit, so I can see it helping him a lot.

I remember years ago I used to occasionally have problems with offline mode. But now I don't, I can play my games offline just fine.

Haven't tested staying offline for weeks at a stretch though so I will not comment on that.

tbh its great and about time. I hated steam for years because it was a nightmare and refused to use it tbh but in the last few years they have turned it into something that actually helps the gamer, encourages gamers to buy gamer rather then pirate them and their DRM is very unobtrusive. I wish other companies around the world would take note

The DRM on steam is optional. It's upto the individual dev to decide on the implementation they want for their game. There are DRM free games on steam which you can simply copy and paste to another location and it will still work outside steam.

Steam is its own DRM mate, yes steam allows DRM free games to install through their system as they are getting a cut of the sales but steam IS its own DRM

Not sure what you are trying to say...pls explain.

As per my understanding steam contains a DRM component which devs can use if they want to and most do including Valve, which is why for most games I can't just copy my neighbors game files and get them to work on my PC without actually purchasing said game on my account. Steam itself (without games) is freeware.

Getting a cut of sales has nothing to do with DRM, it's a content delivery platform. For the games which you can copy and paste and they still work outside steam with no cracking or hacking that means the digital rights are not being managed (aka no DRM).

DRM does not have to cost you to be DRM buddy. Steam is a form of DRM, just because they can choose to implement it on some games and not on others does not take away form the fact that it is still DRM. Its possibly the best form of DMR out there although it is not better than no DRM imo. Never the less, Steam is DRM. And just because it is Game independent does not change that. In reality its no different from Uplay or Origin, just a hell of a lot better for the gamer

I've never had problems with offline mode and I've been able to go offline for weeks.

I read on Reddit from this one Navy guy, he brings his laptop onto his ship and since they have no Internet there while sailing he can't connect so he is in offline mode on Steam for up to 6 months.

Honestly, I don't think there was ever a limit and I've never heard of one.

*Edit, finally got home and was able to read the article that my school was blocking.

We've known for a long time that Offline mode has not been working for some. This is just giving confirmation that there are problems with offline mode and they are going to fix them.
