I want to build a new PC for my Mom as her old laptop finally gave up. Can someone help me choose some parts I should get?

I have an old Dell Studio XPS 9000 pre-built PC that I plan on using, but it's near-bare with almost no parts. I'm looking for:

  • A decent motherboard (upgradeability isn't needed but would be great to have)
    • Compatible with a Radeon HD 6450
  • An SSD (for Windows 7 / Windows 10)
  • A hard drive (1 TB is more than enough)
  • A good CPU (maybe an i5, i7, or an AMD CPU)
  • I'm not sure about RAM. 8GB DDR3 or DDR4? :/

If the price wouldn't go over $400 CAD, that would be great.

Thanks!

using a old psu is not really safe

It is a build that won't even carry a GPU with it, as long as it is from a respectable brand he should be fine, I have a storage PC running an Core2Duo with the same PSU since 2007

Honestly, I don't think you need anywhere near an i5, and you can probably get away with a Pentium.

Same with the RAM, 4GB will be more than enough for what the system will be used for.

Why do you need so much storage space? Even a 240GB SSD should be more than enough.
