Those can be loud and a disaster to maintain. Also those based on standard PC form factors means you can mix and match parts from your component bin.

also good to know is that while server hardware generally has next to no I/O, proliants actually do that bit surprisingly well

 

the shiny brand new G9's i put in service on a contract last year had all the toys like 4 16x pcie slots, extra power connectors, 8 drive bays, plenty of USB, and their remote management tech

my knowledge on the old stuff has gotten a bit crusty tho.

or you buy a pallet of G5's for pocket change and use those as parts bins.

 

at some point during my contract at a local datacenter we were considering the idea of turning our G5's into drawers

Not that impressive compared to my mega-rig. 16 cores, 32 threads, slightly faster than yours too, 128GB RAM, $400 Asus server motherboard, 6 hard drives in RAID-6, 12TB total storage (8TB useable after RAID), and a hardware RAID card.

If I knew what I knew now when I built my main system, I would go dual socket. But it is such a pain to configure the software I'll hold off until the next replacement before I do so.

 

Still, I do have several servers to play with. My latest is described on ebay as a foxconn cloud server, comes with 2x E5-2650 (the cheap 2670s seem to have dried up now), 64GB ECC ram, and... that's it. Currently running it off a single 60GB SSD as a compute node. Seems a little weird to have more ram than storage! I've replaced the coolers so the noise level is acceptable in a domestic environment. There are no PCIe slots to no ability to add GPU.

Yeah, but I already have 6+ PC's going on, so that would make bugger all for difference, especially if it could replace like 3 or 4

Not sure how long you plan to run your servers. Mine has been running for a year and have saved me probably 2-300 euros in power compared to what a cheaper quad system would do. I plan to run it for at least another 2-3 years which will give further savings. So depending on the use case, for longer term usage it may make a bit more sense to run a newer system. Used to work with some x3850 X5 quad xeon systems. They could easily consume 800W while my homeserver takes up about 200W

It really depends. I was once trying to replace three PCs with one virtualized server and Raspberry Pi's as thin clients. That did not work at all. Electric bill went up instead of down, and I spent a good sum of money for that.

 

And the server have lied dormant since then. I put a semi-decent GPU in it and bumped the processors up with a pair of those cheap E5-2680s half-heartily in the hopes of using it as a possible HPC workstation but that plan never worked out.

I am currently building one into a Poweredge t410, it isnt as far as gaming goes it wont win awards but it is better that what I currently have

UPS is sorta self explanatory. The Xeon and ECC is from my old Mac Pro. I also have an old Dell sever for games.

About the only thing I'd argue is server grade in my setup is the intel PCie ssd seeing as Intel's market for them was aimed at enterprise. 

 

Personally I would prefer to have enterprise grade gear,  I don't really care for all this RGB nonsense.  Except enterprise grade boards and CPUs are expensive when you want the latest and greatest.

 

Keeping in mind my workload is a small amount of video editing/rendering/gaming and that's it.

One of NAS units(NAS540) have dual gigabit LAN and my desk PC has a 1400VA UPS). And of course a managed network switch to be able to use the 2 gigabit ports on the NAS .
