TL;DR? How fast is ping with DSL vs cable? How fast is DSL ping?

 

So I have recently moved into a friends place at an apartment. The building has a bundle plan for free TV channels from Comcast/Xfinity, so TV is free for everyone in the building. (Basically its worked into the rent). Internet however, must be payed for on your own. This is my room mates internet: 5946653657.png

What the fk. This is under their performance package that is supposed to be 25mb down and 5 up (capped). At a whopping $2.68 per Mbps. I have done all of the things, including replacing the modem/router combo and getting a new one. Xfinity says "Its a new problem is your area just the past few days, affecting the whole are" And that they want to send the technician that "reads the script" to our place to fix it. If that is true then why the f would the problem for the whole area be at my place? The problem is one of the following, poor quality/old cables in the walls, or the main line is over taxed, as we live on an island- causing the only connection to where we live to be used up by everyone that lives on the island.

I'm so done with this company on every level.

After looking for other internet in out area AT&T might be the way to go with DSL, but does its ping stack up to cable? They have a one year contract plan for $60-65 that is 45mb down and 6mp up. Only reason I'm not jumping at this is I am not familiar with DSL. I made the jump from dial up to cable, and never used DSL.

 

PS: the ping on speed test sometime jumps up to above 100 for no reason.

Prefect sense. This was done when I started streaming 3 1080 videos on youtube.

Im in miami and I get 150mb down with comcast call those apes

Actually, that's 5 Megabits, not Megabytes. So you're actually getting 0.625 Megabytes/second. 

 

Edit: Are you on wired or wireless when you're running those tests?

I'm on ADSL and can't wait for fibre. DSL has poor ping and is unstable. Also when it rains my internet seems to cut out :/(common problem). You are however paying ridiculous amounts for something slower than DSL. Maybe try a once off data package from ATT to test the DSL line since if it's a good line then you'll be fine

You guys are tripping, I pay 200 a month for uhm this...

Edit: I don't live in a very big town so the other providers are very slow, and I couldn't live with it hah. This was the only cable/dsl provider in my area and this is their business line, that is why it cost so much :P. The residential line is like 3 mb/s haha.

HOLY BALLS!!! AT&T wants $100 for the installation fee of a single DSL modem. What the actual F. After haggling with the sales associate, she only offered to split the $100 into 3 payments of $33 over 3 months. Is internet this bad all over the America's still?

Let's self-diagnose the issue with Comcast first. Can you post your modem/gateways signal levels and report if you're using Wireless or Wired when conducting the Speedtest?

 

Concerning DSL (At&t), I can tell you my personal experience with both. I had At&t for ~8 years before switching to Comcast, and the reason for switching was simply reliability. We'd have technicians out every 4-6 months because of equipment failures. The pings with At&t were higher, but I also lived on the edge of coverage for 24 Mbps and 18 Mbps. We had to manually request them to change the profile to enable us to purchase a 24 Mbps package. The differential in pings was about 10ms to gameservers you are from the node, the speeds decrease... and pings increase.

 

My recommendation for you would be to continue to use Comcast. Diagnose your problem here. Talk to Comcast after the problem has been resolved, and ask to renew your contract. This will tie you in for up to 2-3 years, but also can lower your bill.

So I have recently moved into a friends place at an apartment. The building has a bundle plan for free TV channels from Comcast/Xfinity, so TV is free for everyone in the building. What the fk. This is under their performance package that is supposed to be 25mb down and 5 up (capped). At a whopping $2.68 per Mbps. I have done all of the things, including replacing the modem/router combo and getting a new one. Xfinity says "Its a new problem is your area just the past few days, affecting the whole are" And that they want to send the technician that "reads the script" to our place to fix it. If that is true then why the f would the problem for the whole area be at my place? The problem is one of the following, poor quality/old cables in the walls, or the main line is over taxed, as we live on an island- causing the only connection to where we live to be used up by everyone that lives on the island.

I'm so done with this company on every level.

After looking for other internet in out area AT&T might be the way to go with DSL, but does its ping stack up to cable? They have a one year contract plan for $60-65 that is 45mb down and 6mp up. Only reason I'm not jumping at this is I am not familiar with DSL. I made the jump from dial up to cable, and never used DSL.

 

PS: the ping on speed test sometime jumps up to above 100 for no reason.

Comcast is going to be shit ton better than any DSL connection. You have to look at the signal levels the modem is getting. You might have to call them out to look, because it sounds like you have issues with wiring. The fact is we pay for 75/10 and get 90/12 most of the time. Comcast also is upgrading parts of their network to DOCSIS 3.1 which can do 1Gbps/35Mbps. Thats a hell of a lot better than what AT&T can do. Shit, AT&T doesnt offer anything above 6Mbps in my area. They aint even a fucking option. Which sucks because they are the other guy we have no others. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

The only way for DSL to competitive is for them to overhaul their networks and deploy G. Fast. It costs an ISP close to $24,000 for ~100 ports at the DSLAM. The cost to upgrade the infrastructure would be astronomical, which is why we don't see it happening. Deploying fiber in some cases is more profitable, which is probably the reason we see Fiber being deployed in some cases instead. DSL companies have neglected their copper networks, and it's coming back to bite them in the ass. DOCSIS 3.1 is a much cheaper alternative because it's essentially an upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I saw a tech working at the V. Rad (DSLAM). I see Comcast out periodically replacing and tuning amps, and doing "health checks" on hardware.

 

The end result is this. G. Fast claims gigabit speeds, but DOCSIS 3.1 is capable of 10 Gbps. The FCC defines broadband as 25 Mbps/3 Mbps, which many Americans don't have access too. I realize that other countries are lucky to receive those speeds. Guyana has a maximum speed of 10/10 for Businesses, which is crazy. [/rant]
