The PS4 Pro uses what amounts to a downclocked RX 480 (911MHz vs 1120MHz). Considering that the RX 470 beats the GTX 1050 Ti, you're not actually going to beat it in graphical performance.

I'm also going to point out the argument that if you want to price match the PS4 in any way shape or form, you're going to have to spec it out exactly. Which means you're missing:

  • A Blu-Ray drive
  • A controller
  • A Wi-Fi module

Otherwise you're cherry picking out parts to inflate your budget.

I'd go with this for a few reasons. Now I don't know for sure how the Pentium will perform but in reality it shouldn't be much less then an i3-6100 at stock clocks. This would give the console play easily upgradability to an i5 or even i7. Plus, I think that $13 can be overlooked being as I would include a years of PSPlus into the cost. If you do this you can also include the price of the keyboard and mouse plus windows. Along with that, most people have a TV already, if not you were going to have to get something to use with the PS4.

Eh, tbh if you actually tinker with settings ect, add the cost of PSPlus and then add the cost of price of games you'd buy for the PS4 Pro and add the money you save from going with a PC into the PC, would be nothing for it to have an RX 480.

PS+ is only necessary if you want to play on line for games that aren't F2P or if it requires a subscription fee (e.g., FFXIV does not require PS+). If you don't care about going online, then this is not an issue. Also people seem to gloss over that PS+ includes free games every month. Also people seem to think console games don't have sales or their prices don't go down over time.

Anyway, this is the closest I could get to matching the PS4 Pro as much as possible, minus the BD drive:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x39xTH
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x39xTH/by_merchant/

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 880K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($92.29 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A68M-DG3+ Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  ($44.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Crucial 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Toshiba 1TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($54.89 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon RX 480 4GB G1 Gaming Video Card  ($224.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Rosewill RANGER-M MicroATX Mini Tower Case  ($33.30 @ Jet)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 430W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($44.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $520.31
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You could add another $20 for another 4GB of RAM, but also keep in mind the PS4 doesn't use 8GB of system memory. It's 8GB spread between the system and GPU.

yeah but the ps4 doesn't have to run windows either. i would find it hard to run windows and games on a pc like that. i guess you could run something else besides windows.

Sure, if you demand AAA titles at 1440p and 60FPS on ultra max settings.

4gb is nothing. you try and run windows and gta 5 on 4gb of ram good luck. I play gta 5 at 1080p and i tend to use anywhere from 2 to 3 gb of ram so that leaves very little room for windows to run.

You may as well inflate the budget another $60 for every year you plan on keeping the PC.

If it's the actual OS, that won't work very well since the OS wouldn't be finding the hardware it wants. Otherwise, it's a version of FreeBSD, which isn't really all that popular in the grand scheme of things.

Apparently GTA V on 4GB of RAM runs better than with 8GB.

I also got Windows 8 to idle at 350MB of RAM, without touching much in the way of configurations or stripping out unnecessary components.

The shader count on the PS4's GPU is the exact same as the 480's, therefore it's a 480.

The PS4 Pro natively renders everything a higher resolution (it's not 1080p upscaled to 4K, it's up to 4K, but most of the time it will float between 1440p and 4K), so the CPU is not a bottleneck here.

No! :P

I mean, it looks good, but in my eyes as a general gamer, it's not really a "PS4 Pro killer" in terms of cost/performance.

Sorry, I'm kind of passionate about this subject because the argument gets so cherry picked and strawmanned to death.

Then again sometimes I feel like rustling jimmies.
