Intel i5 6400 Gaming?

A day or so ago I got advice on building a PC from this forum, however I figured an i7 was more than what I needed so I went into my local computer store to get a quote for an i5 PC however the only i5 they have in stock is the 6400.

I was wondering, is this CPU worth buying for gaming. The reviews it has gotten seem very mixed in this regard.

Graphics card will be a gtx 1070 if that is useful info.

It is a good gaming chip, I have experience with it. If you want something now get it, and later you can upgrade it. If you can wait, go with the 6500.

Yes, a 6400 should be just fine for most games. My 3550 is equivalent in performance. You probably won't be running games like Planet Coaster, which is extremely intensive and brings even a 6700K to its knees, so you should be fine. A GTX 1070 won't bottleneck it either.

its a decent CPU. I have one in my wifes machine with her 1060. If purely gaming, it will do just fine. You are losing 700mhz per core which will be favorable in games, but you should still be ok with the 6400 if that is all you can get.

The 6500 won't give a big enough performance boost in gaming imho to justify the wait.

True, I had the option to wait for the 6500 or go with the 6400, and I chose the 6400 and It works well.

I would go with the 6500. That extra .5GHz comes in handy in a few titles and the turbo goes up quite a bit more.

I'm truly a novice, that is a powerhouse GPU, I have the I-5 6600K with a 1060 running VIVE, from the videos from Linus and others the I-5 6500 is the sweet spot. I upgraded as a local did not realize they bought 2 and I got it slightly discounted

For me I was searching for the best bang for the dollar possible on an extreme budget so I bought a four year old i5 computer off Ebay for $200 and will be adding a GTX 1050 Ti to this machine.

Since I am heading interstate in the next few days I may hold off until after then to see if they have anything else like a 6500. I a little nervous about the 6400 since I play a few CPU intensive games (or at least I have read they are).

Gah building a new PC can be annoying :P

Which games, if I may ask? If you're playing Planet Coaster, it's i7 (preferably X99) or bust unless you want unbearable lag if you have more than 1 thousand people in your park.

Those games will run fine on an i5. I'd say it's even tolerable on Battlefield 1 or Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

thats part of my nervousness about it, if/when I start to push into those newer games I would rather have a cpu able to handle them well.

On the flip side its price is so nice lol

bugger it, I will get the 6400 I reckon, in all honesty, if in a few years I want to upgrade, it is super easy to change a CPU.

this is true the Locked i5 for example my previous i5 3550 compare to my new i5 4590 basically is the same and comparing them on the i5 6500 will be only on the intergraded graphics. so if you are just staring up and have a good budget go with the new i5 6500 or i5 7500 and for me it can last 3-5 years or sell buy a new one every year. :)
