Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I don't have a spare battery on me, is there any other way I could try in the meantime?

Won't I then have to change the thermal paste? I don't have much and I don't want to waste it

Fair point, check after all else fails. Does the fans spin up at all? Usually without a CPU the fans spin up still.

Weird, maybe the RAM could be a problem. If you have spare RAM maybe swap it out and see.

But the RAM was working perfectly with the old CPU, I see no reason why it shouldn't work with the new one

That's what I was thinking. It sounds like a RAM problem though so you might have bumped in on replacing the CPU. Do the fans just lock on full speed, or do they adjust their speed?

It's a old computer ( socket 775) so they lock on full speed, but I'm sure I didn't touch the ram

Not Sure. It could also be a coincidence that when you replaced the CPU something gave in. If you can change the RAM around, put a different stick in . You never know .]
