i3-6100 with a Z170-K?

Hi! I'm trying to upgrade my rig a little for the new year since I have a pretty crappy build already and I would like some advice about my ideas. I've done some looking around and I think a good choice would be an Intel i3-6100 with an Asus Z170-K Motherboard.

Since I mainly game, cpu doesn't have to be a monster. I'm still a noob at this so be easy on me. I have a fair budget but not ridiculous. Tell me if this is a decent combo or no please. Thanks.

My current build:

CPU: AMD Athlon II x2 260

GPU: Evga GTX 750 TI SC

PSU: Corsair RM550x

RAM: 8GB of 4GB DDR3

No man, z170 boards are for overclocking needs. Spend less on the motherboard and get an i5. It'll last you longer and an i5 is better for games anyway.

You would be wasting a little cash on the motherboard, but it would allow you to drop in a 6600k/6700k at a later date and overclock

Just saying, a locked chip on a Z series board is a waste. You'd be better off going with pretty much the cheapest board that has all the features you need.

The Asus Z170-K would work fine, but unless you're either overclocking or using SLI you don't need a Z170 board. You could get a cheaper B150 or H170 motherboard and save a bit of money.

bad idea the i3 can't overclock so it would be a bad idea get a cheap motherboard and spend more money on your gpu.

He can buy the Z170 and the i3. It'll give him good performance now and better when he upgrades to a K-CPU.

then he can get a Pentium which will give him better price to performance, then he can get a i5 or a i7 on the future.

Keep in mind that the Z170 is the only chipset in the mainstream that allows a full 16X PCIe port as well as other ports.

I doubt it, but he could be talking about USB 3.0/3.1, internal USB 2/3, SATA, etc. since the chipset limits how much can go on the board with manufacturers splitting the I/O as desired.

His current psu is fine, I'm gonna guess he also already has a case and hdd so they can be knocked off too.

Depending on the BIOS, you can overclock the i3 on a Z170 chipset board. You have to overclock from BCLK and not the multiplier, Skylake isn't Haswell or Sandy/Ivy with BCLK again...

No, just to use it  to learn overclocking and and get started giving purpose to the z170/270 motherboard where he can after saving some money buy the higher end CPU like the i7 7700k when the price gives some drop or find good used deal, My advise lays in the possibility of giving the motherboard some reason were him to insist in it, in the way I see it was still a helpful commentary.
If it was I personally I would go with h110m-c and i5 6500. Or Kaby Lake's equivalent.
