NO!

i7 has more cache and different cores. Each core runs at a higher base clock and Turbo clock. However, in most games i7 gains are small, especially at higher resolutions where your GPU is usually the limiting factor anyway.

In big 48+ vs 48+ battle's it is common to see a avg of 75% and up on my CPU load while the 1080 is averaging around 40-50 % load. Now my assumption was that by upgrading to the i7 6700k I would see no performance gain, but I am having my doubts seeing in some cases 50 fps with such a system

Maxius 8 hero alpha

I5 6600k OC 48ghz stable. On a h320 x2 swifttech water cooler avg 40c on Max load

16 gbs ram xmp enabled

Gtx 1080 strix

i5 with a 1080 is unwise. Even the 6700K can't handle the full potential of a 1080 at 1080p. What resolution are you on?

Yep it is a bottleneck. But it's game induced so no luck there.

OK that's what I was thinking, BTW 1440 p at 144. But what I was wondering if it is worth to sell the i5 and potentially upgrade to either i7 6700k or maybe the i7 7700k if it is supported. It is my assumption that the i7 will prove no benefit as it is just a i5 with hyper threading.

ok, so i will be fine to stick out the next couple of intel revisions if they continue their small incremental upgrades, opposed to buying and selling for a 1-7 % faster overall cpu.
