Android holds an 81% market share in the mobile landscape

A new report from ABI Research for Q3 2013 breaks down the mobile market between the four biggest players to show how each platform shakes out. As expected, Android still dominates the market, and now runs on 80.6 percent of all smartphones, showing slow but steady growth. Meanwhile Samsung—which in turn dominates the Android market—now ships 35 percent of all Android smartphones, up from last quarter.

I'm surprised that iOS holds so little market share now, but hey, whatever.

When you think about it, only one company holds 14% of all market share. That's a f*ckload of money while there is at least 10 companies making android phones, even though iOS' has gone down.

iOS devices are still increasing in sales quarterly iirc.

It's an oversaturated market tbh. Like someone said above, you have so many companies making Android phones and devices (and multiple versions of one at that) compared to Apple.

Samsung released, what, 4 or 5 devices based on the S4?

Are there graphs of current company shares? I assume Apple and Samsung would be the biggest then HTC.

Retina Macbook Pro : Intel i7-3840QM | 16GB 1600 MHz | 256GB SSD | Nvidia GT 650M 1GB | Mac OS X 10.8.5

It's only considering smartphones shipped (sold) in Q3 2013, so the last 3 months.

I thought the graph was smartphones shipped as of Q3 2013.

As in that's how many there are in each ecosystem right now.

"now ships 35 percent of all Android smartphones, up from last quarter." The fact that it mentions an increase over the previous quarter makes me think these numbers are for one quarter. 81% is much too high for a total market share considering the entire lifetime.

What would the "other" be? Would it be Ubuntu?

I guess. It would also include non-smartphone phones.

Yay Android! Many people probably switched because of its customizability features. :) Windows Phone is not bad imo in terms of ranking. Can't wait to get GDR3 update from HTC on my phone.

It's not very surprising to see the iOS market share down so low now, only 1 company makes iOS devices. Apple doesn't really play the OS market share game either, they are a hardware company first and foremost. As the smartphone market gets bigger, Apple's market share will likely continue to drop, even if Apple continues to sell iPhones at they rates they have been.

As a High Schooler, I see my teachers having iPhones and the students have Android phones.

I guess it's a price thing, Android phones are usually much cheaper than iPhones and I do live in a relatively poor area.

I'm not surprised. I bought a windows phone because I needed a cheap phone (HTC 8S) and I gotta say, it isn't bad, but after spending a few weeks with it, it just got boring and I want to go back to android.

Cooler Master 690 II Advanced - I5 2500K @ 4.5Ghz - Geil Enhance Plus 1750Mhz 8Gb - ASUS ENGTX 570 DCUII - MSI Z68aGD65 - Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B - Samsung 830 128gb and Crucial m4 128gb - much other stuff not worth mentioning

All the #yoloswag kids have an iPhone and most people in my neighborhood can afford them.
