What is rendering the the guys over at LMG always doing?

Im an editor by trade. so the way it works

 

you shoot video, every camera shoots different codecs and this usually affects the ingest of the media and how its used before you edit.

 

now, when you start editing you import the clips to the project window and from there is where it gets fun.

 

This is non-destructive editing-

 

the NLE (non linear editor) sees the clips as references and when you "Cut" you are simply creating a route to the information you want to be used for the video.

 

most projects can use more than 50-100 clips for a smallish project with 1 camera and exponentially doubles as you add multi camera shoots. so 50 can become 100, 100 can be 200 etc. 

 

 

when you render the video (export) what ever you want to call it, you are literally creating a new interpretation of 0's and 1's you created pathways too.

 

from here you have so many codec options (compress / decompress....co-dec) for youtube you more than likely export in the h.264 format as it is what youtube prefers and limits the processing on their end and can represent the video you cut in its truest form. 

 

If their editors like most editors are they will export a full rez file and an online version.

Like you recorded a video on a camera. Now all you need to do is cut and join the parts you think are necessary and upload the video to youtube. So where does the rendering comes in?

 

^This is my understanding of how stuff works :P I'm from a rather non technical background, Im an accountant. Sorry for the noob question

They edit in effects, convert resolutions, and change file formats so that, when they upload it,  it will behave in a way your computer can play back.

 

Even just stitching together two pieces of video takes a lot computer horsepower because you can't just stitch the two files together. For your codec to properly combine the data from the two videos, it has to decode them, make metadata and re-encode the video. Mix in the special effects and things too, and all of those need to be baked into the video frame by frame when it's encoded by it's codec.

 

The process of going through this is refered to as rendering, it's not quite the same thing as 3D rendering.

I also believe back in one of their moving vlogs they said they also use it to transcode the video when they off loaded it from the cameras.

Im an editor by trade. so the way it works

 

you shoot video, every camera shoots different codecs and this usually affects the ingest of the media and how its used before you edit.

 

now, when you start editing you import the clips to the project window and from there is where it gets fun.

 

This is non-destructive editing-

 

the NLE (non linear editor) sees the clips as references and when you "Cut" you are simply creating a route to the information you want to be used for the video.

 

most projects can use more than 50-100 clips for a smallish project with 1 camera and exponentially doubles as you add multi camera shoots. so 50 can become 100, 100 can be 200 etc. 

 

 

when you render the video (export) what ever you want to call it, you are literally creating a new interpretation of 0's and 1's you created pathways too.

 

from here you have so many codec options (compress / decompress....co-dec) for youtube you more than likely export in the h.264 format as it is what youtube prefers and limits the processing on their end and can represent the video you cut in its truest form. 

 

If their editors like most editors are they will export a full rez file and an online version.
