My first build - How is it?

neirbonhoj

This is my very first build and I wanted to keep it under $1200 but the keyboard, cooler, and wifi adapter brought it up. I got this cooler because I plan to overclock. Please look it over and tell if I should change anything for something better.

I used a single monitor and I plan to game at 1080p and maybe 1440p. I'm not super concerned about the noise because of my headphones.

If you want to play online video games, you will always have an advantage if you are on ethernet. It's worth the few hours to route the cable through the wall. Otherwise, it's a great build!

Hey, @neirbonhoj. Welcome to the forum! You can get people's attention by quoting them with the arrow below their response or tagging them with @ like I did at the beginning.

There are a few things I would change. I shall post a revised build momentarily.

Get a EVGA G2. The 6600K with some OCing should be fine, don't worry about major bottlenecks. Bottlenecking a 1070 is better than reaching a limit on a 1060 :D

basically get this and you will have an inaine rig for quite a while, smashing everything at 1080p, 1440p and getting good FPS in 4K even

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

So... you got rid of OP's preferred colors... got a GPU that is WAY overkill for 1080p... got a non-backlit TKL keyboard... and increased the price to boot.

  • I think the keyboard is better value, and I like tenkeyless keyboards with a minimalist design. OP doesn't have to buy it.
  • I said I went with a different colour scheme right at the top. OP isn't honour-bound to buy these parts. The monochrome colour scheme offers an alternate perspective.
  • I increased the price by accident when I picked a 480GB SSD. I switched back to the PNY CS1311 240GB SSD, and it's closer to his original build now.
  • People with a Core i5 2500k from six years ago and a GTX 480 from almost seven years ago can still game reasonably well at 1080p. I think that's worth something.

By the way, I appreciate the criticism. Keeps my builds better-optimized.

You would! There isn't much of an improvement when it comes to gaming performance, but the core i7 6700k will definitely help you with Video Editing, 3D Modelling, rendering, and similarly multithreaded workloads.

A 1070 is better value than a 1080, although a 1080 will last longer (compare the GTX 470 and the 480 right now, about seven years after they launched). Either way, you won't see a difference at 1080p 60Hz or even 1440p 60Hz between the two cards right now- they'll both deliver a locked framerate.
