Single GTX 1070 or 2x480 crossfire?

Go to solution Solved by tarfeef101,

Yep, just go with 1 GPU if possible. No need to hamstring yourself in some titles, create instability where none would have previously existed.

Which will be better for gaming?

this setup will have to last at least three years.

Sli is not an option because my mobo doesnt support it.

thanks in advance

two 480's will give you better performance overall in some scenarios compared to the gtx 1070. 2 480's can also match the performance of one gtx 1080.

CPU: i7-6700K | Motherboard: MSI Z170A Krait Gaming 3X | RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4-2666 Memory

2x rx480 has the potential to be a bit faster however, Crossfire cards are not supported in all games and also suffer from micro stutter and other anomolies.

The single 1070 slightly less powerful but still a beast, is supported fully in all games and does not suffer the same stutter problems associated with dual GPU setups.

I would go with the 1070 for the smoother experience

What refresh rate?

I'd just go with the 1070. It handles both of those with ease, and gets over 60 in most 1440p titles.

CF just brings many added costs.

Really I have not had any problems with Crossfire with the 480's before. Describe how you know this is true. It may only be true with "nvidia" supported titles that were not optimized for amd. Overall i have had no problems with my 480's.

Amd has fixes just like Nvidia with new driver updates almost every week that have dealt with crossfire/sli. So really you have to try it for yourself to believe it, just as I have.

I am not going to get into an AMD fanboy discussion.

Dual gpus, while giving you good performance when they have the opportunity to do so have more potential for problems. Not all games support SLI or Crossfire so even if the vendor is prepared to create drivers, if the game developers don't write the game to support it you are out of luck. It has nothing to do with AMD vs nvidia.

Besides, why start off with a solution that is intrinsically compromised?  It does make sense if you have an existing card already and need a boost in performance and are prepared to exchange lower cost for more compromises. If you can afford the higher end card now, you delay the need to compromise too much now and still have the option to take that path later when the higher end card has dropped in price

Fan boy or not. the proof is in the pudding. two rx 480 beat one 1070 and keeps up with the 1080. and 2 amd rx480 cards will run you half the price of either of the nivida cards. and the blower type are just fine. Mine are quite and run in the low 60's

Something to consider is that a single RX 480 now and a $200 next-generation card in a year or so will add up to roughly the same price as a pair of RX 480's or a single GTX 1070 now. It doesn't really have to last three years if it costs half as much, right?

One RX 480 will cover your 1080p60 needs very well for now, and you've saved $200 to buy a new card whenever you need it. By that time, you might have a GTX 1160 or RX 680 (making up some names) to consider instead. It's dangerous to take guesses like this, but next generation's $200–250 cards will probably need to be about as fast or faster than the GTX 1070 just to keep pace with history. But of course, you can still add the second RX 480 anytime you decide you'd rather go that way.

My personal preference will always be 1 single more powerful GPU is better than 2 less powerful GPUs, generally speaking. I had CF 290's a couple years ago, the the time spent dealing with various CF-related issues amounted to more than that actually playing/enjoying games. Went to a single 980 and now 1070 and couldn't be happier. Just play games hassle-free. ;)

no. Im a massive amd fan and have used their cards for years... but im going to have to agree with the others. while two cards is always better than one, it is less of a hassle to just have one more powerful card thats almost as good
