You can start by googling the humidity in the town you live in. 

 

You can get basic equipment to measure humidity for not a ton of money, I believe some smart phones can even do it.

I could be wrong, but I do know a lot of phones these days have thermometers and even accelerators in them, I don't see why a hygrometer is out of the question.

No, because there's no point in it. The phone is waterproof anyway.

 

There's some math out there that you can use to convert relative humidity from one temperature to another. I don't know that formula, but Google can help you. I say this because you can probably use the relative humidity outside, find the temperature difference between outside and inside, and do the math from there.

 

If you don't have a thermometer handy then welp, you're boned. Or I dunno, you can estimate the temperature in your room.

I actually have three here.  Nice to know when to fire up my dehumidifier.

 

Good way to keep track of humidity inside.  Makes a world of difference down here in the South.  Keeping the humidity below 50% makes 75-78F very nice.  70-80%+ is no fun.

I get shocked very often during the colder months.  Sometimes really bad too.  It stings a lot!  ?

 

I've wondered if getting a humidifier or dehumidifier depending on if the humidity during the cold months is too low or hi here in my basement.  In case that would stop me from getting shocked so much.

You get static build up more when humidity is low.

 

Colder months tend to have less humidity and drier air.

So I need a humidifier?

 

Any idea how big of one I need?  Do I need to account for the square feet of the area I want to cover or the entire room?

 

One thing that worries me is how far away from my computer tower/electronics like tv etc. should I have it? 

 

Do I even need to worry about the humidifier getting moisture in my tower?  (The top has vents that don't have fans mounted so it's a mesh screen pointed straight up atm.)
