alright, so 1070 then? The 1070 has new features that the old 980ti doesn't and a higher core clock, plus 2 extra gigs of vram.

See how your 980 performs first and you can extrapolate what to upgrade to from there.

So just wondering, right now i have enough money to do one of two things in my computer. The first option is upgrade my gpu from a gtx 980 to a 980ti or a 1070. The second option is to upgrade from a i5 4690k to a i7 4790. Which one should i do?

I'd wait off and upgrade to the latest intel core generation w/ new mobo and DDR4 RAM.  But, if your desperate to upgrade, go for GPU (1070) is what I'd say.

It Won't Fail Cause of Me.

What are your specs and for what reason are you upgrading?

I'd either wait and get a Kaby Lake i7, mobo and RAM or get the 1070 now if you can't wait/don't want to spend that much.

Are you gaming in surround? Auxiliary displays for things on the side use very few resources.

I'd say CPU now as afaik all those games like dem cores and threads and a 980 is perfectly capable as of right now.

Gaming in surround for some games, not in surround for others

I have two 980s in sli and the 4GB vRAM is a issue with some games at 3440x1440 so you'll definitely want 6 or 8GB for 5760x1080.

Gaming in surround isn't going to be heavier for your cpu but instead your gpu. Unless you're already experiencing cpu issues, your 4690k should be more than capable.

Going from the 980 to a 980 Ti or 1070 isn't that much of a jump. Your 980 should already be fine for most games. If you need higher settings, it may be worth considering a 1080.
