Uhm, is everything fine?

Go to solution Solved by samcool55,

I would replace it anyway, it's not very expensive and even tho it's just coffee it's possible there is some residue left that will cause corrosion and eventually mess it up.

Ok, I was drinking coffee and watching youtube videos on my mac and by an accident spilt it. It went all over my desk and soon I realised it went behind my desk to the multiple power outlet thingy, realising this i switched of the main socket and cleaned everything up with toilet paper meking it dry. I turned on my Mac played a bit of CS:GO and did some work and everythings fine. Am I still meant to be worried or is everything gonna be fine?

How long could it take before the corrosion has effect?

You spilled on your MacBook? or just the power bar?

If it got inside your mac, I would definitely pull off the bottom cover and make sure that it is in fact dry in there.

Replace the power bar, theyre like $5

When in doubt, re-format.

Usually a few weeks.

Corrosion is also the cause of stories where a phone gets dropped in the toilet or everything, works fine for a while and does eventually dies.

I would replace it. If there's still liquid in there, and it creates a short, the power bar could catch fire.

Even if it's been more than 2 hours?

Depending how it's corroding, yes.

A fire is even possible weeks after the accident.

How big the risk is, i don't know, but there is one, so again just replace it :)

It's not very expensive.

A friend of mine had very similar issue though it was with milk, the power bar worked for a few days afterwards but eventually died though there was no fire. So it is likely you'll face similar fate, might be better get a new one as soon as possible.

if you're a bit of a handyman those power strips usually come apart somewhat easily, so if you're also a cheapskate you can pop it open and clean it out.

that said, moments like these are ideal to get an uprgade for your power strip, otherwise you'll end up like me with a power strip that's approximately 50 years old powering your tools :D

I've removed the power bar and now my iMac is attached to the main socket I'll get a replacement soon. Thanks for the feedback everyone, who knows, maybe one of you could've saved my life.

Oh, maybe consider one with a surge protector, but make sure it's a little more than just MOVs, although they're the main part.

I don't really recommend this but you can always open it up and see the damage.

I might be wrong but afaik it should be safe? I don't think there is something in there that can shock you when it's unplugged so i think it's safe to open.

Again, don't take my word for that! i'm not an expert.
