I just saw I have a 3gb limit on my windows 7 pro 32 bits.. Is buying windows 10 64bits the best way to unlock the ram limit?

32bit versions of windows have a limit of 3gb(3.5gb allocated ram)

64bit versions for consumers go up to 192gb ram ( if u got home premium or above )

Also noteworthy, 3.5GB of ram is the maximum you can have in any 32bit OS. Though your GPU's ram count against that too. If you have a GPU with 2GB ram, your main system can only have 1.5GB.

If you were to get a 4GB ram GPU, your pc wouldn't even boot.

Yeah, you'll be able to use it all with 64 bit Windows.

^why I upgraded to Windows 10. But if you're running DDR2, you're going to need a full PC upgrade long before you actually utilize more than 16 GB

Hum, don't mind the mega quote. Has I can see, it should work fine. But does anybody know how to upgrade to a new OS without losing my files? Correct answer will be marked as solved :)

backup and install. not much really to explain. You need to backup regardless and install is the cleanest bug free way to upgrade.

uhhhh no. Not at all. VRAM is normally a totally separate thing, a 960 isn't going to use system RAM, it's going to use VRAM built into it. It's only when you have an iGPU that this is a problem, since it now has to dedicate a portion of your RAM as VRAM. And iGPUs don't use much VRAM anyways (the .5 out of the 4GB includes the iGPU's RAM)

Im pretty sure some system RAM addresses get mapped to VRAM, so the more VRAM you have the more system ram Windows needs. I had read a blog about it the other day. ill try find it.

Plz, this is not 1996, nobody should be using 32 bit xD

You can back up your files to another drive and clean install windows, then move files back.

32 bit versions of Windows are artificially limited by Microsoft to 4 GB of memory. Of that, you basically get about 3.25 GB due to architecture limitations (but the memory above 3.25 GB is still used by drivers so it's not like it's unused).

Technically, 32 bit Windows operating system could use more than 4 GB of memory, but that was dependent on motherboard BIOSes to add support for a feature called PAE and enable it by default - not all motherboards had that feature and not all enabled it, so it was easier for Microsoft to save money on tech support by simply restricting 32 bit versions to 4 GB maximum.

Anyway, it's not like it matters anyway. By default, any 32 bit application can not use more than 2 GB of memory. A specially created application, and with some options checked in the Windows configuration, an application could use up to 3 GB of memory.

64 bit operating systems don't have these limitations, applications can use lots of memory, some cheaper versions of Windows are artificially limited to 16 GB , 32 GB or 64 GB or 128 GB of memory (you get the idea), others are limited only by the motherboard's capabilities (number of memory slots)

A 64bit version of Windows won't use twice the amount of memory a 32 bit Windows would use, the memory usage would probably be more like an extra 10%...25% more memory compared to the 32bit version of the same operating system, it would vary from application to application...

So even with little amounts of memory, it's still worth using a 64bit version of Windows.

There isn't. You can't upgrade from 32bit to 64bit. Clean install is always required in those cases.

You can't. You'll need to back them up. There is a way to do this with an upgrade to Windows 10, but it leads to so many problems that I'd say reinstalling is your best bet

So basically I should just buy an external drive and upgrade to Windows 7 64 bits for free instead of paying for windows 10 PLUS external drive?

So true it hurts

if you own 32 bit windows then you are allowed to replace with 64, you do not need to pay twice. If you ask MS for a install disc they will be dicks and tell you to go talk to your OEM supplier

They made win 10 easier like that. Windows 8 & older they're total dick heads; they flick off a lot of customer service responsibility to their OEM partners

You can get widows 10 for free multiple ways:

http://www.howtogeek.com/272201/all-the-ways-you-can-still-get-windows-10-for-free/

I would suggest doing this since you need to clean install anyway.

$30 from reddit microsoft software swap is not that expensive...

You can always just use windows 10 without activating it until you have enough money for a copy.
