4 core and 8 gigs ago...

KCmetro

Okay, actually that would be 4 cores, 4 GHz, and 16GB ago...

I'm building a gaming computer with 4 core 4GHz CPU and 16GB RAM, but would like to have the option of 32GB later on (for server stuff).

Is there a big price difference in motherboards between those with 16GB capacity and 32GB capacity for memory?

My current list...

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LK73m8

...it is incomplete.

I still need to pick out a motherboard.

I think you mean 4GHz ...

And basically any modern motherboard can take 32gb of ram , thanks to 16gb sticks being available . but if you're getting an ATX or micro ATX z170 board for that cpu ( which you should , considering you got a K SKU and an AIO ) , it will have 4 dimm slots , meaning a 4*8GB config is possible.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

All Z170 motherboards will support 32gb. If your looking at H170, there isn't really a point since your processor is unlocked allowing  for overclocking and H170 boards won't overclock. I recommend going with a Z170 for your case.  The Gigabyte HD3 is a good inexpensive choice.

I'm getting ATX (full size). I'm currently going with 2x8GB memory... so if it has 4 slots, then that'll be perfect for 4x8GB memory. Cool. Thanks! :)

That's a really tough choice. I'm definitely going in the Z170-type direction for motherboard, but brand is the tough choice.

Updated list...

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KCmetro/saved/gzTJxr

...and still haven't pinpointed a mobo.

But, then again, I've been hopping around looking at other components too, trying to finish the list soon hoping to buy parts no later than tomorrow (Cyber Monday).

What's the best brand Z170-type motherboard?

The main thing that nobody here has asked is what is your total budget for the build?

We need to know what you're wanting to spend before we can go any further.

$2k max. I was hoping for $1.5k max but have already gone over that. It might even go a touch over 2k, hoping not though.

Anything else like color scheme that you are trying to do?

I really don't care about color or appearance of anything, I just want good functioning components. :)

Then I'd suggest this one:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/LsX2FT/asus-motherboard-z170pro

It'll give you all of the options you want without being stupidly expensive.

Thank you for the input.

I added that to the list (updated: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KCmetro/saved/gzTJxr), might go for a variation of it.

Looking at the 3 variations of that brand's 170s...

    Asus Z170 PRO GAMING    LGA1151    ATX    4    64GB     (20)        $121.99

    Asus Z170 PRO GAMING/AURA    LGA1151    ATX    4    64GB     (6)        $129.99

    Asus Z170-PRO    LGA1151    ATX    4    64GB     (8)        $146.98

Pro Gaming & Pro Gaming/Aura both have additional ports:

OZ35dfy.jpg

Pro doesn't have as many:

RTBDoHP.jpg

Granted, the VGA's no longer needed, but the additional USB 3.0 ports are nice.

The Pro (non-gaming) costs more than both gaming models.

The only other differences I see are....

The gaming mobos:

DDR4-2133 / 2400 / 2666 / 2800 / 2933 / 3000 / 3200 / 3300 / 3333 / 3400 (gaming)

DDR4-2133 / 2400 / 2666 / 2800 / 2933 / 3000 / 3200 / 3333 / 3400 / 3466 (gaming aura)

The non-gaming board:

DDR4-2133 / 2400 / 2666 / 2800 / 3000 / 3200 / 3300 / 3333 / 3400 / 3466 / 3600 / 3733 / 3800 / 3866

SATA 6 GB/S:

Gaming = 4 (+1 SATA express)

Gaming Aura = 6

Pro = 4 (+1 SATA express)

Onboard video:

Gaming & Aura = depend on CPU

Pro = onboard
