Best GPU for this system?

SameerSohail

Hi.

A friend has the following system:

Core i5 2400

8gb ddr3 1600mhz

320w prebuilt HP PSU.

He asked me to find him the best gpu possible for this pc. I'm confused between a 1050Ti and 1060 because i think the 1060 would have some bottleneck with that cpu.  I need your help in deciding between the two. And it would be great if someone can recommend a good PSU as well because the existing one is obviously useless.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

1050ti because while the PSU can probably handle the 1060, it definitely shouldn't.

EDIT:

oh but when you replace the PSU, the 1060 wil indeed be bottlnecked but you'll still see massive improvements and then you can later upgrade the CPU.

I'd get something like the EVGA 650G2.

be careful with a gpu, a friend of mine put a gtx 960 in a prebuilt hp (with a new psu) and the machine refused to post due to incompatibility with the bios. he ended up buying a second hand mobo and then his issue was solved.

A 1060 would probably bottleneck a little but not enough to justify stepping down to a lower card. And a CX450M (grey not green) should be good

Thanks. 1060 it is then.

3gb or 6gb?

Can you tell us the model # of the PSU? Can you upgrade it as @wrathoftheturkey suggested? If not, does it have PCIe connectors? If it does, get a 1060 3GB. If it doesn't, get a 1050 Ti.

overkill, don't you think?

Not really, no.

PSUs are one of the few things you can future prove your PC with. A nice PSU will last you long enough to get a new CPU and maybe even a higher end GPU later on.

3gb or 6gb?

6gig. The 3gig does not have the same chip* as the 6gig.

*(It actually has the same chip but with fewer cores etc. pp.)

Ok so I'm gonna go for the 1060 6gb.

And as far as the power supply is concerned, it is ultimately up to my friend to decide. But I'm gonna recommend the CX450M to him.

If you have any more budget PSU options please let me know.
