GTX 970m 3gb vs GTX 960m 4gb

Jerochy

Hey guys.

So I sold 2 used PoS alienware laptops for 850 and wanted to buy a new decent laptop with the money. I already have a main desktop that I use for all my gaming. I was originally just going to get a inspiron 7559 from dell for 800 with a gtx 960m in it. It was well in my price range, looked clean, and would be a nice upgrade from the gtx 460m I was using on my m15x. The money from eBay just went through 2 days ago, but I wanted to look around at some other laptops with black friday and cyber monday coming up. I stumbled across this gem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154412&ignorebbr=1

So now, I'm trying to see if there is any reason not to go with the MSI apache compared to the dell one I was going to get here: http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-7559-laptop/fncwpw5715h?s=dhs&oc=fncwpw5715h&ST=pla&dgc=ST&cid=302850&lid=5758103&acd=1230980731501410&ven1=FNCWPW5715H:54715087428:901pdb6671:c&ven2=:&ven3=103403641203944732

The only thing I like about the dell better is that it isn't as flashy. I like the clean look of the 7559, but for 50 more dollars, a gtx 970m is a lot better.

What do you guys think? Also, are there any better deals for 850 anyone can find? This MSI is pretty much the best I've seen yet. Thanks fellas.

I only recommend buying laptops with Pascal GPU's because they are desktop grade and can be overclocked, but can't be overvolted.

get the 970m, you should find a good deal on a laptop like that, as most shops will be wanting to clear them out to may way for the pascal laptops

That's exactly what I was thinking. I can't quite afford a laptop with a 1060 (they are running around 1300), so it's looking like I'm going with the 970.

never oc a laptop, their cooling solutions are designed to handle the heat load that the parts put out at their current clocks. Increase the thermal output and you could cook your laptop.

Yeah I know it's just a thing you can do with laptop Pascal GPU's.

I own and did a user review of a very similar model MSI at link below:

I think it offers an ok level of GPU performance, certainly I wouldn't want to go lower.

I wish the one in Newegg link was on offer when I got mine, as I feel I paid too much for the CPU which isn't as important compared to having more power in the GPU.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Thanks man I appreciate the review. I think I will go with this laptop, I was just a little hesitant as I wanted something  little less flashy. Thanks again!
