RX 480 or 1060

deleted_member_030719

I am considering building a gaming PC for my friend as a gift, and I am wondering if I should put an RX 480 8GB in it or 1060 6 GB. I am leaning towards RX 480 because he can add another RX 480 and crossfire unlike 1060 and SLI; with more and more games supporting crossfire & sli it should help future-proof his PC, at least the games he plays do. I am just wondering what one would be the better option for him?

if you're only doing single card, RX 480 4gb, or GTX 1060 6gb.if you plan to dual card in future, RX 480 8gb

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

PLEASE QUOTE OR @ ME FOR A RESPONSE xD

multi-gpu setups are inherently inferior, and those cards are in completely different price brackets; 1060 is more powerful in general.

Woo!

The 1060 outperforms the 480 in most games & to my knowledge, runs cooler too. As others said if you wanna run dual GPU's then AMD is it, but being that's not really worth it the 1060 gets my vote.

Depends on what games he plays and plans on playing. They both perform well and at 1080p your processor is going to be the factor in how well everything works. I'd go with the 480. Freesync is cheaper, I like DX12/Vulkan, and Civ 6 is an amazing game. :D

I vote for the 480. Multi gpu could actually become interesting again....if they really manage to get dx12 to work properly that might actually become very, very interesting again. I mean there are already interesting tests where they even got Nvidia and AMD to work together. I am assuming SLI and crossfire are basically dead, but the dx12 multi gpu feature looks very promising.

Also 480 has Freesync which in total with a compatible monitor is very affordable and I love playing on mine. It actually didn't work a couple of days ago for some reason (it automatically just turned off) and now I know: I never want to go back.

A reason for the 1060 is its raw power, but that is about it for me. Power consumption is lower, yes, but it is not earth shattering and the noise can be very low on a 480 if you get something like an msi gaming variant.

PC: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @4.2HGhz 1.25V || Noctua NH-U12S SE2 || 16GB (2×8GB) Aegis 3000Mhz CL16 @3200Mhz ||

for the price of both the 480 and 1060, you can pick up a fury, which is a fair bit faster.

Different price brackets? Here the 8GB 480X and 6GB 1060 are virtually identical prices...

To answer your questions/respond:

CPU: i5-6600k

Monitor: 144Hz monitor with FreeSync.

I am currently looking at the XFX GTR RX 480 because I seen a good review of it from JayzTwoCents.

Also, the games he mainly play would either be able to get over 144Hz with a single GPU or they support crossfire.

as long as you don't mind the price go for it. I wouldn't go for a GTX 1070 unless you overclock that processor.

If it's a completely new build, get him a 480 and a FreeSync monitor.
