2x SSD RAID 0 slow boot times?

Hi,

 

I just freshly installed Windows 10 using an USB. I switched it from my 850 EVO to 2x RAID 0 Kingston V300 SSDs. 

 

The boot time since I press the button is 51.71 seconds. It's ultra slow, just as slow as it was before. Fast boot is enabled.

 

What can I do to speed up boot time to like 5 seconds? My laptop got same RAID and it boots in about 4 seconds.

RAID 0 for an OS is a bad idea since you won't gain much and can run into problems.

No problems so far, only slow boot. 

Like I said in the post ABOVE...

 

Laptop with SAME CONFIG boots in 5 seconds to Windows.

PC with SAME CONFIG (as in RAID 0) boots in 52 seconds to Windows.

Did you set the BIOS to RAID?

I literally have fresh copy of Windows installed right now on the RAID 0 SSDs. Nothing is installed, not even Mobo drivers.

You should probably get those before worrying about the slow boot.

I'm not sure how software can be related to boot times.

Software can indeed have an impact. What hasn't been mentioned yet is that motherboards all have different boot times themselves, so maybe you've run into the wall of speed at which the motherboard can actually boot, regardless of storage speed?

I've seen sites like anandtech have boot times as a test in their reviews, so maybe find a detailed review of your mobo?

I ultra highly doubt that ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME boots in 50 seconds.

Never say never. The Maximus VIII Impact boots in something like 40, so it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine that the rampage would be slower considering it has a lot more stuff to initiate and check.

Might not be the issue, just coming with suggestions.

Have you tried testing the transfer speeds of the setup?

Yes 950mb / s.

 

Oh I guess I lost the "silicon lottery" then. Too bad my friends ASUS RAMPAGE 5 EXTREME boots in 5 seconds. Aww too bad.

Yea, my laptop with 2x SSDs on battery power (power saver) boots 45 seconds faster than this PC.

I highly doubt that it boots in 5 seconds, as Anandtech clocked POST at just over 20.

That still leaves 30 seconds for windows to load, assuming that you're not exaggerating the 50 seconds, which does indicate that something is limiting the windows boot sequence.

Will post video tomorrow for whoever doesn't believe me then. I'm here to fix the problem, no argue about what is doubted and what is not. I only state facts.

 

Previous system with similar motherboard (GA-Z87X OC FORCE) literally booted faster than this on a single V300 SSD (15 seconds), which is sad.

 

System boots in exactly 51.57 seconds, with timer in my hand right now.

 

Also, your article states Windows 7 boot. Windows 7 doesn't have fast boot option. It just doesn't work. Windows 8+ supports it. So 20 seconds can be shortened by LOADS.

How much of that is POST, and how much is windows loading?

Windows loading is about 15 seconds, rest 35 seconds is before I even get to the Windows Logo screen.

 

In the screenshot above, it says that the SATA transfer speeds is 1.5GB. Which is SATA 1 if I'm not mistaken? I don't know why that is.

Okay! The 15 seconds still sound slow considering your transfer speeds once booted. Maybe have a look at those drivers/updates and see if that changes anything.

POST time should be completely unaffected by the speed of your storage device, though. It comes down to the amount and types of devices it has to detect and setup. I'm assuming that you and your friend doesn't have the same hardware, which could explain the discrepancy between your boot times. Just speculating here, but it could be possible that it takes the board a long time to detect and properly setup your storage, ironically.

1. Newest BIOS possible.

2. He doesn't use RAID 0, I do.

3. Newest drivers freshly installed just now, no change.

4. I disabled everything I could. I enabled it to boot straight from the RAID. It doesn't go through anything I don't want it to.

Don't know what you can do about your windows load times then. I'm sure more wise men are prepared to help you here!

As for the POST, regardless if you tell it to boot straight from the raid, it still has to set up all devices connected to the mobo. I'm guessing your storage has a dedicated raid controller (don't know how those types of cards actually run), which could explain the long setup time. 

 

So, to conclude, you might be able to do something to shorten those 15 seconds it takes windows to load, but you should expect not to be able to do a lot about the 35 seconds prior to it. In fact, I see that you don't even have your SLI setup in there yet, which might actually add some more time to the POST time.

This wouldn't help, because I already reset everything in BIOS. The only thing that was changed is enabling RAID. Not even XMP profile is enabled.
