I finally got a new power supply today to power the graphics card my boyfriend gave me.

PSU is an EVGA 600B 600W power supply and the graphics card is an nvidia gtx 770 (galaxy).

Problem is we're stuck on the pins for the PCI-E slot. The PCI-E pins are 6+2 making 8.

Dad refuses to plug in the last 2 pins there, he says the black wires are negative it'll short the power supply.

It also seems to be a little temperamental, we plugged it in as shown in the picture, powered it down, moved one of them over and it failed to start, giving the "please power down and connect the PCI-E cables" message. Switched it back to the way it was and same issue.

I tried and failed to do a clean install of the new drivers, it said it couldn't find the compatible graphics hardware and it wasn't showing under device manager either.

I'm really not sure what to do.

The two pins need to be plugged in. They are two grounds, they are exactly designed for this purpouse and will not short any power supply.

Ok sorry he's technologically inept, but there is a reason there is an 8 pin plug there instead of a 6 pin.

Yes they are two grounds, and yes they need to be plugged in for it to work.

Most power supplies work this way. doesn't seem like much of a problem, just that your dad doesn't know what he's talking about. They also put protection diodes in the card to prevent shorts if you some how did plug it in wrong. The powersupply would cut out as well because it also has its own safety measures.

Tell him to stop screwing with it and read this thread.

6+2 is completely normal for computers. My old GTX 770 ran off of two sets of 6+2. The computer did not catch on fire.

No, do not tamper with PSU power connectors.

Plug them in and leave them alone.

And go tell him to do research about ATX PSU standards.

Why is he the one telling you what to do with your PC?

Tell him to screw off and do things yourself.

I'm not very familiar with computers. I'll try to convince him to contact nvidia before doing anything.

There's no need to be familiar when it comes to plugging power into a graphics card. It's about a complex as plugging in a table lamp.

Just plug in the extra +2 pin cable. When he asks why it's working, just tell him it suddenly started working fine. If he's gullible enough to believe that a 6+2 connection will turn your graphics card into a Note 7, then he'll believe this.

Alternatively, you could just say that he doesn't know what he's talking about and that you figured things out yourself. It's better to be independent from your parents than to wait on their approval or advice.

I finally managed to convince him. Everything is plugged in now. Enderman that diagram was a massive help. Thank you so much. Just need to work out how to install the new drivers now.

Go to geforce.com/drivers, select GTX 700 series, then select GTX 770 and your operating system. That will find the latest drivers direct from Nvidia.

Make sure you uninstall your old GPU drivers. Using Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode is the best way of doing this.

That didn't work at first. I fixed it though. Turns out another driver needed updating. Something from the motherboard I think.

Everything runs smoothly now. Thank you all.
