Should I wait to get a i7 7700k??

I'm building a new personal rig and have gotten to the point where I have everything except for the CPU and GPU.

Just watching the prices at this point, annoying, slowly creep up so they can put them on "sale" later...

Anyway I was planning on getting a i7 6700K when of course they announced the 7700K that supposedly will be coming out in Q1 of 2017.

So the questions is, I have a good, be it oldish rig, that works fine right now, should I wait for the 7700K and pay the premium out the door for it? Or hope the prices on the 6700K actually go down and stick with that?

Thanks!

CPU's don't really drop in price over time.

At the same time, the increase in performance year to year is not that huge either.

You won't really be losing out on anything going 6700k. I think the 7700k supports Intel's new memory type, other than that there isn't much different.

The 6700k won't see major price decreases, and there really is barely an improvemnt of kabylake over skylake. 10% max.

The performance of skylake over haswell was actually pretty big for gaming.  I saw a vid where they compared a i7 4970k vs a i7 6700k with a gtx 1070.  The difference was actually pretty good especially for cpu intensive titles :P

If you aren't overclocking, the stock speed might be worth it a little. Otherwise, Kaby Lake is more or less a Skylake refresh and thus won't see any IPC improvements, meaning a 7700K overclocked to 4.5 GHz will perform the same as a 6700K overclocked to 4.5 GHz. Even if there was any IPC improvement at all, you're not going to see any tangible improvement in most scenarios.

Do you need anything from the new chipsets?

That's what I hoping for but I've been watching the price everyday for the last month. It started at $309 US and it's now $349 US on NewEgg so of course when Black Friday or Cyber Monday come around it will get put on "sale" for $319, you save -$10...sigh

Watch for the black friday deals and make the decision based off of that, IMO.

If there is a killer deal I will upgrade now, if there isn't - I'll wait for Zen/Kaby
