Don't use Kali Linux in a VM. It's a penetration testing distro that is designed to be live booted, with persistent storage if you need it, off of a USB drive.

I second that..I've got mine on a bootable usb and it works..

albeit not that great considering switching between systems is a bit of a hassle..

it's just something you're going to have to deal with!

Yeah. that would kind of be the point though. (Being able to quickly switch)

I doubt there's a better way to do it..but maybe that's something a more seasoned user would be able to help you with

I've ran Kali Linux in VMs before, with a few hypervisors (both liveboot and VM images). Not something I would recommend. It might work well with a KVM like UnRaid, but that is assuming that Kali plays nicely with the other operating systems. I know that earlier versions of Kali, and BackTrack, wouldn't run in a stable dualboot with Ubuntu or distros based on Ubuntu.

Unless you're going to be doing network penetration testing, it's best to leave Kali Linux alone. It's a specialized OS, and is "open sourced amongst a small ring of trusted developers" under Offensive Security, or, in the real world, a proprietary OS. You aren't going to find much developer support for programs that you can find in many other Linux distros.

Offsec provides premade VM images for VMware and VirtualBox as well as have VirtualBox guest utility packages in its repo so I'm wondering where you got that impression?

Outside of testing Kali in various hypervisors, I actually looked into the documentation to come to the conclusion that the VM images don't actually have much real world application. They seem to exist for validity testing, not actual usage.
