1080 or 1070? (monitor specs included)

lieder1987

Good evening everyone,

I am trying to decide between an EVGA 1070 or a 1080 and I am struggling. I have the money for the 1080 but is that the best idea?

I am currently using an Apple Cinema Display 30" which has a 60hz panel. The resolution is 2560 x 1600 which I know is 1440p and that a 1070 can handle that easily, but for how long at ultra / high settings?

Thanks.

Hmm, if you have the money and performance per dollar is not a large concern to you then the 1080 would be the best performance choice. I run a 1440p panel with my 1080 and it performs wonderfully.

A 1070 will work very well also but I always recommend buying the most powerful single GPU choice that fits your needs.

Unless your going 4k then the 1070 should handle things fine for a while to come.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

Since you want Ultra in the long run still, would say 1080. There are games already where the 1070 might not cut it at Ultra at that reso. 1070 would be fine enough if you are good with tweaking settings when performance might be short.

WARNING!!: DO NOT get 1070 or 1080 cards from EVGA if you OC as they have been catching on fire because of a lack of VRM cooling, if you do still want to get one you will need to get the thermal pad mod kit from here : http://www.evga.com/thermalmod/

A bit overreacting. 1 It's not all of them. 2 Catching fire only happens in the GTA V mod that replaced them for the Note 7. In real they only get hotter then needed, but should still not cook.

Better safe than sorry, there have been reports of the the VRMs actually catching on fire all over the EVGA forums as well as reddit.

Yup, 1070.

Keep the extra money from the 1080 - for a future upgrade from the 1070 to whatever comes next or after that.
