Will intel ever enter the dedicated graphics card market?

IAEInferno

Just wanted to know if they will produce mainstream dedicated graphics cards for consumers and compete against amd or nvidia as team blue.

If they stick to iGPUs, probably not.

But if Intel decides to start making actual GPUs then I would be excited to see how well they do.

ever is a big word... i'd say yes if amd or nvidia ever wants to sell or go bankrupt

i don't think so. it would not be very logical to enter an already pretty much dominated market space. between AMD and Nvidea there is just no more place for Intel.

thank you oh infinite wisdom.

I would be surprised if they did. they'll stick to integrated. might try to compete with AMD there though

If they do not re-brand another manufacturer's product, or outsource the work, then likely not. The amount of R&D, investments and such that would og into starting a new line of hardware would far outweigh the potential benefits that Intel would see from entering the market.

AMD will have an advantage in that area when it comes to IGP right?

Starting out yeah but it's intel after all. they rofl stomp AMD in terms of CPUs so if they tried they could probably put out a good iGPU

I believe Intel's first GPUs were dedicated, weren't they?

Anyone remember the i740, which came out around 1998?

Iris iGPUs are beasts right now. I cant wait to see what they can do later. I wonder if they'd partner up with Nvidia to put something like a 1050 on a CPU

I think an Intel + Nvidia team-up would be interesting - putting Nvidia GPUs on-die/package with Intel CPUs. :)

Generally, I'd pair Tesla GPUs with Xeon Phi CPUs, and some Xeon E7s.  I'd pair Quadros with the rest of the Xeons, and GeForce GTX would go on the mainstream CPUs.  I'll list some of my approximated ideas for more specific pairings below.  (I'll use the names of current-generation parts, some existing, some extrapolated from previous gen.  I would expect we'd have to wait a generation or two for the combos to actually happen, though.)

Tesla P100 = upper end Xeon Phi & top 1 or 2 Xeon E7 (like 8890 v4)

Quadro P6000 = lower Xeon Phi, most of the rest of Xeon E7

Quadro P5000 = lower end Xeon E7, 2-socket Xeon E5 except the lowest few SKUs

mid-range Quadro (gaming performance similar to GTX 1060 6GB to GTX 1070) = lowest 2-socket Xeon E5s, most 1-socket Xeon E5s.

low-range Quadro (gaming similar to 1050 to 1060 3GB) = Xeon E3s, lowest couple 1-socket E5s.

Titan XP = i7-6950X, 6900K

GTX 1080 = i7-6850K, 6800K

GTX 1070 = i7-6700K, 6700, i5-6600K

GTX 1060 6GB = i7-6700T, i5-6600, 6500

GTX 1060 3GB = i5-6400, 6400T, i3-6320, 6300

GTX 1050 Ti = i3-6100, i3-6100T, Pentium non-T

GTX 1050 = Pentium-T, Celeron
