BF4 loves high speed memory

I’ve been doing testing on Haswell to determine whether or not higher speed memory could improve system and specifically gaming performance, especially with multi-GPU systems. My intuition and some of the research I’ve read online suggests that Haswell’s “sweet spot” memory speed has actually jumped from the time-honored 1600MHz to 1866MHz. What I found with Battlefield 4 is remarkable, though. Testing on an i7-4770K overclocked to 4.4GHz and two overclocked GeForce GTX 780s in SLI, I discovered that memory speed affects Battlefield 4 performance in a very measurable and perceptible way. Well damn....I guess I need to look in to ditching my brand new 16GB Vengeance low pro/low voltage kit. =(

 

Gotta say I was expecting the test bed to be an AMD system where high speed mem is typically favored more.

Just imagine what mantle could do with high speed RAM: the GPU could access system memory with out the need for the CPU quickly.

lol good point, bud damn....really didn't see this one coming. Plenty of articles and tests done about mem speed not really gaining much in games. Then suddenly a wild warlock appears and casts a mega FPS increase upon BF4.....wtf....

I'll hold off and maybe slick or linus will run some tests for us when the game launches officially. If it does mean these kind of gains then this ram is the way of the dodo bird.

Corsair has a pretty solid rep, I can't fathom them ruining that with fabricating improvements out of thin air.

I have 1866 so I guess I would be pretty well of in BF4, too bad I give no f**ks about Battlefield.

But the beta also was super CPU dependent, so maybe that has something to do with it.

The fact that it's a beta and is horribly optimised but still has huge performance gains only shows that the gains from fast ram will be even greater once optimisations do occur.

So what do you think, can we thank AMD's HUMA tech in consoles for this kind of thing? (if that is the correct thing I am referencing for this) I hope this only improves because if it does....well then it kind of breathes life back into high performance memory.

Pretty much most games prior to BF4 beta, have been 32bit right? Bar a few, and even then, these tests (mem speeds) were probably overlooked or not done at all due to past gains of stuff-all.

 

Maybe the jump is from using 64bit and some throughput based "devils magic" is happening for the betterment of us all.

We'll obviously find out more about this once it lands and reviewers catch on or if some of you guys comment them to do these tests....

Interesting jump in performance though..... If only this had happened to all games years ago.

I'm running 2133mhz Ripjaws @ 1866mhz,.. My old board would do 2133mhz fine, but my new one doesnt :(

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I dont believe it, i hope its some fake results, an annolmaly or something crazy happened in one of the tests which explains the fps difference. I just cant believe it, it seems like complete ****
