upgrading to 1440p gaming.

Dexterity
Go to solution Solved by I Hendrycks I,

Over many years I've gone from a 1680x1050 60Hz TV to a 1080p 120hz monitor to a 1080p 144hz monitor to now having a 1440p 165hz G-Sync monitor, I also sometimes play on a 4K TV that's next to my PC desk. The jump from 60hz to 120hz (or 144hz as it seems to be more common now) is definitely the most significant change over going for a 1440p monitor. You can pump out a ton of frames and it's oh so buttery smooth on the gear you already have. 1440p is great but with the premium price of a 'good' 1440p screen (a fast and good picture) you also then need a better GPU on top of that or else you're stuck at lower framerates with lower graphical settings just to keep up to the framerate you're used to on your current setup.

I'd honestly recommend going for the best monitor in your budget that's 1080p at 120hz or 144hz with the nicest picture. I'd strongly recommend a BenQ as imo they make the best looking and best performing monitors and are a very reputable brand.

Good luck on your search!

Hi guys, I have always been playing games at 1080p / 60hz monitors for the longest time.

I recently upgraded my gpu to rx480 8gb.

I know cheaper 1440p monitors start at around $220 or $250. And I see then go as high as $400 or more with freesync.

Do you guys think 1440p is a good upgrade? and is it worth the extra $150 or so for freesync?

Edit: I guess now the debate is if I should get 1080p/ 144hz over the 1440p idea.

480 8gb is optimal for 1080p get a 1070 or 10080 for 1440p

Unless your game can't get over that frame rate then a free sync is not bad

1440p freesync is a nice jump from 1080p 60fps. the 480 won't deliver perfect 1440p gaming but with freesync it'll make games feel a lot less jarring. if you want better 1440p performance get a fury or fury X. on the nvidia side a 1070 or better

yeah I know but I dont think I need everything on ultra or extreme for 1440p

I bought the 8gb version so that my gpu can handle some of the games hopefully at 1440p.

but it will not be on high 60 fps it will be on high 30-40 fps or medium 60 fps and your experience wont be that good and as soon as the new gen cards come you will have to upgrade to keep it up because you are already barely able to do 1440p

hmm maybe.. so you are saying I should probably just get a 1080p/ 144hz monitor instead of a 1440p monitor?

Have you personally experienced 1440p gaming yet or 144hz 1080p gaming?

i have experienced 1080 and 4k (my m8 has a 4k rig and were really good friends)

depends see if you play comp games like cs or games that are not at all casualy the 144hz is just so goooooooooooooood but 4k is more for casual gamers who dont care for fps or 144hz

Response times for IPS panels can't get under 4ms, at least from what I've seen. Going off of that though, response time has nothing to do with input lag or any sort of lag. It refers to how long it takes for a pixel to change color. The only effect of a high response time, we are talking 7-8ms+ here, is ghosting.
