How to build your own sever?

RyBradLax

Could someone walk me through picking parts for assembling a sever computer? I would like to stay in the $200-$500 range, or preferably on the cheaper side?

What is the purpose of the server?

Do you plan on doing any transcoding?

I apologize, I'm not familiar with what this is.

Grab a AMD AM1 platform...  They're under 30 watt machines, quad cores, support for ECC memory, and so on.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Transcoding is when the server must convert a video file from one resolution to another, or from one bitrate to another, or even an entirely different format. It's a very CPU intensive process.

If this would be needed/desirable to have while streaming video content, then yes.

No, it isn't needed for streaming video content.

I use it for streaming to my PSP and Original Xbox. A core 2 Duo machine will probably be fine, Core 2 Quad even better.

How fast is your internet? If it is equal to or below 100 mbps you should be fine. A raspberry pi 3 would be your best option as Ram is what to look for streaming content.

I get around 30mbps down and 5mbps up. Is building one that's more effective in my best interests long term? Also, how much is the raspberry pi build?

How does internet speed affect media streaming on a LAN?

I assume that the OP wishes to host some of this media on a server on the network, and stream it to the devices over LAN Ethernet.

The Pi's Ethernet port is actually on the USB bus, which is only USB2.

Rpi way should do you best unless you plan on upgrading to a gigabit connection. This link tells you everything you need and what to do.  https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-nas/

A Raspberry Pi 3 is $30.

You would need some sort of storage device, as well.

Point taken. Sorry for my mistake.

If they don't plan on streaming over the Internet, it doesn't affect anything.
