Hi everybody,  im looking to switch out my i5 4460 cpu since i am recently noticing it getting close to being maxed out in games, but i don't really know what to upgrade to since my custom pc was built off site by the shop where i bought it from( at the time i was younger and had saved up and honestly was a bit scared about breaking stuff if i were to try to build it myself)

anyway i currently have an i5 4460 and a gtx 970 and a corsair CX600M power supply and my cpu seems to be more of a problem in recent games while my gpu is still fine, i would really like to just switch the cpu and not have to get a new mobo and everything but i really don't know what cpu would be able to fit in the same slot while at the same time being a good jump in cpu power, currently i don't really have a  max price i want to pay for the cpu i just want to see what options are out there, from i5 to i7 i just want to see what options are out there if i were to swap the cpu only since i don't really know a lot about the cpu's and i got kind of confused, this is my first custom pc which i have had for a while now but it wasnt actually built by me.

anyway i hope any of you have some good reccomendations, thanks in advance!

i live in the netherlands(idk if that helps, maybe pricing and availability or something)

thanks!

What is it stopping you doing?

But depending on what you want it to do the 6700k or going to 4790k if the mobo would accept it.

Budget? Its being max out in games? What do you play? Are you sure its not the 970 with its gimped VRAM? There not much worth upgrading on the same socket to other than an i7 4790k (even that is bad value compared to your i5). I still dont think your CPU is the issue here, I would buy a differnt GPU instead.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

Could you list out you PC parts in pcpartpicker.com and specify the types of games you play. Do you notice lag or anything or simply want to take your PC to new heights?  Also try to take a screenshot of your task manager window while playing the most demanding scene in the games you play and mention your budget.

mafia 3 is maxing out my cpu, probably because recommended spec for that game is higher then that cpu, but my 970 is fine, i checked it with the task manager. gpu fine cpu maxed or close to it. also my cpu is not hitting thermal limits i have checked that too.

like i said not really looking at budget atm, i just wanted to know if there is an option on the same socket that could make an improvement, im honestly not in a position where i can change everything mobo ram etc for some of the newer chips

6700k would mean a complete new platform tho wouldnt it? mean new mobo new ram and everything if i want to benefit from it. at least thats what i have been hearing, i could be wrong, and it shows being maxed out in mafia 3

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/qVBjGf thats my current setup i also use an older samsung ssd 120gb and a 1 tb hdd and a 1080p monitor(dont know exact model) and recently it is mafia 3 that is kicking my cpu around, while my gpu seems to be handling it fine, on the topic of lag it really is both, i do notice it in mafia 3 from time to time, but it is also that i want to bring my pc game up, but since my cpu seem to be the problem at the moment i thought if there was something that would give me a power jump without reworking my whole system that would be nice. i have no idea what the prices of cpu's are atm which is why i said budget doesnt really matter as long as it is the same slot, just to see if there is anything for the same slot that could give me more power right now, or if i should just save up more and rework the whole system

edit: these pictures are when i go from playing mafia 3 to tabbing out and taking these pictures in that moment. they are around the 70% to sometimes 99% when im actually playing the game if there is a lot happening in game

upgrade to an i7 4770. you will save loads and get one second hand or something like that and wait until it dies then upgrade everything

Im still going on an i7 3770 and as soon as it dies im going for the 6800k

that sounds like a good option thats kind of the idea i had with the upgrade something that could give me a boost at the moment whilei wait to gather my savings together to overhaul the whole thing. isnt 4790 the same slot? and isnt that faster then the 4770? maybe im wrong but like i said im kind of confused when it comes to cpu's. just wondering if that could be an option too, thanks for the answer, ill look into that

Erm ... I dont know how much quicker it is, but you can use the 4790. I found out by going on partpicker and taking out the i5 and it then gives you a list of all compatible cpus!

The fella above mentioned xeons. Its your choice but I doubt you need it!

I7 4790 is around 310 euro new at the cheapest store i could find http://www.sicomputers.nl/intel-core-i7-4790.html, the cheapest 4770 was around 320 euro new https://www.megekko.nl/product/0/270557/Intel-Core-i7-4770?r=tweakers.net ,  so to me it would be a no brainer to go for the 4790, no idea how the second hand market is around your area for used cpus but there should be some 4770 and 4790 around 200-220euro if there are reasonable people in your area

yea i saw they were at about the same price range here, so ill go look for a 4790 do you think i will be fine with my cx600 power supply? its probably a good idea to put some aftermarket cooler on it though isnt it? since im still using the stock one( i know its scrubby)

yea a bit more beefy aftermarket cooler will be usefull, especially in the  summer of this year was a indication for next year, also the spu should be fine

I wouldn't get a super expensive cooler. Also maybe look at a second hand CPU, Im not sure if you should worry or you should. Its jsut it would be loads cheaper. The amount of heat will always be the same coming from your cpu, having a bigger cooler will help keep the CPU temp down but the same amount of heat will be transfered no matter how big your cooler is. So what im trying to say is. Dont liquid cool. Dont get a HUGE cooler like a noctua NH D14 or 15. get a hyper 212 evo. Maybe go second hand aswell and just put some fresh thermal paste on it.

I know its not appealing to do it second hand, but it could still have a lot of life left in it. And as your not overclocking then the other person wont have overclocked either, providing you buy a non k version. You will not buy a K version with your mobo. ok.

Xeon fella is back again. God knows if you want one, but if its cheaper go for it!

Really? What games are you cpu limited by? I have a locked Xeon E3-1231v3 that turbos to 3.6 GHz (it's basically a locked i7 marketed as an entry level workstation/server cpu) and I can't think of a AAA game I play other than GTA V where my GTX 970 isn't the system bottleneck, and this is at 1080p.

Have you used the Riva Tuner Stats Server console (can be enabled from MSI Afterburner) to see what your gpu usage is like in games? Because if your gpu usage is at 99% (and it should be most of the time) that means your cpu isn't holding your gpu back. Now if your gpu usage is say 90% or lower most of the time then you are being cpu bottlenecked. Make sure you don't have vsync or a frame limiter on though when testing (of course I have vsync on when actually playing the game for fun though), those will keep your gpu usage way under 99% unless you're struggling to hit your frame target.

Mafia 3 is not well optimized right now. I would recommend not upgrading until they get the issues sorted out and you have a better idea of what is really needed.

Intel Xeon 1650 V0 (4.4GHz @1.4V), ASRock X79 Extreme6, 32GB of HyperX 1866, Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT, Silverstone Redline (black) RL05BB-W, Crucial MX500 500GB SSD, TeamGroup GX2 512GB SSD, WD AV-25 1TB 2.5" HDD with generic Chinese 120GB SSD as cache, x2 Seagate 2TB SSHD(RAID 0) with generic Chinese 240GB SSD as cache, SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 850, x2 Acer H236HL, Acer V277U be quiet! gpu is def under 90%. cpu capped at mafia 3 like i said before, i do notice stuttering and my 2nd screen is totally useless when mafia 3 is on on my main screen, cant run anything on the side because my cpu is completely capped out when in game. when i tab out or go in to pauze screen it dips to 50 when tabbed out to like 70 ish when in pauze screen, do i go back ingame it jumps right back up to 90 and sits and stays between 95% and 99% when playing, i have played with ingame settings thinking draw distance would reduce cpu load, things like depth of field and FOV i thought maybe could help but nope stays totally maxed out. im just looking around to see if i could get something cheap and easy for now. if not ill just end up saving. mafia might be really bad optimised too because i dont have any other problem with other games, but i did run a can you run it test on mafia 3 and recommended cpu is higher then what i have so thats why i started this thread in the first place

Edit: i wanted to see if i could find a boost with a fairly easy upgrade without jumping to a new platform with new mobo and everything since at the moment thats not really possible

Mafia 3 is a huge piece of crap, it runs horribly on my system. I thought Arkham Knight was a terrible port but Mafia 3 is far and away the worst port I have ever played. I can only pull about 30 fps on 1080p ultra with my Xeon E3-1231v3 + GTX 970. I have to drop to low to get a steady 60 fps (it's more like 70s when driving). But my gpu usage is always at 99% in Mafia 3, though to be fair the game's performance is so bad I have only played the first mission and won't play any more until they fix it.

I use a Xeon E3-1231v3, which is an i7-4790 minus 200 MHz, and it's great with the stock cooler. No one who doesn't overclock needs an aftermarket cooler on an LGA1150 chip. Except maybe the i7-4790k, which runs 400 MHz faster than the i7-4790. That one you might need an aftermarket cooler even at stock, since it runs at 4.2 GHz on all cores at stock.
