Faster for what? GDDR5 if comparing raw speed, but they aren't really comparable. They are different types of memory used for different things. 

 

 

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

The question makes no sense. Those are 2 types of RAM that don't really compare to one another.

 

But I guess you could say DDR4 is the "faster" one, given that it's the best thing we have available for it's use, whereas we have GDDR5X and HBM as superior choices to GDDR5.

GDDR5 is faster, but it only comes on graphics cards. If you're using DDR3 now, you won't be able to use DDR4, but the speed difference between the two are negligible right now.

the real-world gaming performance difference between them is negligible right now... however the actual speeds and bandwidths between them are pretty significant. and there ARE applications where such speeds are crucial.

They have way different applications. GDDR5 has much higher bandwidth but a lot more latency.

There's almost zero performance difference. Very few programs take advantage of the bandwidth DDR4 offers, and by the time DDR4 is utilized, it'll be outdated.

DDR4 = 300 x 8 = 2400 mhz
DDR3 = 200 x 8 = 1600 mhz
DDR2 = 200 x 4 = 0800 mhz
DDR1 = 200 x 2 = 0400 mhz

 

GDDR5 = DDR3
GDDR4 = DDR2
GDDR3 = ATI
GDDR2 = DDR1
GDDR1 = DDR1

 

so, is this correct ?

GDDR5 is a derivative of DDR4, GDDR4 is based off of DDR3, GDDR3 is based off of DDR2, and I can't find anything pertaining to GDDR or GDDR2, and each generation of DDR memory has a range of stock speeds.

 

DDR3 ranges from 800MHz to 2133MHz. DDR4 ranges from 1600MHz to 3444MHz.

The fastest I knew about were Corsair 3444MHz DIMMs, cool that GSkill has faster speed DDR4 though.

Being based on something, and being a derivative of something are not the same thing. Technically speaking, DDR4 is also based off of DDR3 as well.
