Can a 1060 or RX 480 handle 4K gaming?

What do you want settings and FPS wise.

My 7850 can play most of the games i play(tf2, dota, borderlands 2) at 4k 40-60fps.

You want new games at high and your thinking 1080.

Do you think the Nvidia 1080 will be able to handle 4K - 60FPS - 120hz refresh rate.  I think we will see a lot monitors at CES in January that will have 4k - 120hz....

There is no point in 120Hz if you're not getting 120 fps......

And you would need a titan XP to be able to do 4k 120fps on every game at medium settings.

It can do 4k 60fps on high/ultra, but doubling the frame rate means you need double the power.

Two titan XPs might be able to do it on high.

Okay good to know.  Thanks...  Think a RX 480 will be good for the build now and would let me upgrade her machine next year with either a 1080 or a 1080ti when it is released...

Especially cause it is a complete new build, nothing from her old machine is worth saving..

The 480 can do 4k at low settings and get 60fps, but on 1080 it can pretty much do high/ultra for almost every game.

Thought the lower end cards were getting into 4k this generation.  Seems 4k is still a high end option at the moment.  This seems like the best option at the moment to get her a new machine, while waiting to seem what NVidia does in the 1st quarter next year...

With that said RX 480 vs the 1070, Which is the better card?

Some 4k gaming in lighter games

only the titan XP can do some real high end 4k Gaming

But I'd stick to the RX 470 + this solid 4k free-sync display as far as performance per dollar goes, AAA games are going to be ran at 1080p naturally, but then you get the 4k desktop experience and 4k in some games

G-sync 4k is going to be fairly expensive

Thanks a bunch...

Her current machine is struggling to play WOW on the lowest settings, so it is time for an upgrade.  This will keep the budget within a reasonable dollar amount.

She just doesn't want a big tower, so the MICRO or MINI ATX cases will work out great for her...

Thanks...

About 1,000 to 1,500 is what I'm planning on spending for the machine.

Her monitor is alright at the moment.  Haven't decided if I want to upgrade it yet.  One thing at a time, seems to work best with her, other wise she gets over whelmed..  She has a decent 1080p monitor that she is happy with.

So a complete machine, Case, motherboard, CPU, PSU, GPU and SSD, plus necessary cooling...

Performance per dollar parts mostly

I'd hold out to jump into 4k gaming until next year, but just get the monitor now

Either AMD's Vega will be doing 4k at a lower price, or the 1080ti will be out and be hopefully lower in price

I try to space her computer upgrades out as much as possible, because she is not someone who into technology.  Plus change stresses her out, she just likes to play WOW, and her puzzle games...  So if I can put something together now, with an option for a quick GPU upgrade in the future than I'm good.

Plus she won't need to know if I upgrade the GPU next year, I'll just do it when she is out of town...

That's perfect, thanks...

Actually the 480 might be able to do relatively decent setting 4k gaming for Legion

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/21.html

We tested the game in DirectX 11 mode with details set to "Ultra".

Yeah I dont think she needs a 4k monitor for WOW lol. Honestly an RX480 with her current 1080p monitor is already more than enough.

Not at maxed out settings in demanding games, no. You'd need a 1080 for that.

Don't spread things like that... A 1080 CAN'T handle the most demanding games @4K ultra and get 60fps. The Titan XP would be the best bet for that purpose but even this one would have a hard time. We're close to 4k 60 fps on a single GPU but not quite there yet.
