Haven't used Mint extensively yet, but I heard it's good for Windows users who want to try a distribution of Linux out.

Ubuntu is pretty good and gets supported more, though some people complain about some of its sluggishness with the Unity desktop.

I use Ubuntu MATE (Ubuntu with a different desktop environment than Unity) because I rarely have problems with it.

It's pretty much about personal preference.

I like mint, but it does have it's problems. I used to be a BIG mint fan and installed it on most of my PCs/laptops, but now I have moved to ubuntu as it seems to have caught up on being more user friendly and in some cases is better to work with especially for installation of programs. Trying to get mint for example to install some programs is more arduous than ubuntu.

In the Mint vs Ubuntu competition, I do not believe that you are going to find one that is "much" better than the other. Mint is technically a derivative of Ubuntu.  Meaning Mint uses Ubuntu as its base, so if you agree w/ where the design/development community is going then yes it is def better.  However, as most things in the Linux community its really just an opinion.

I'd recommend trying them both, and seeing which one you like most.  When I evaluate an OS I have a list of things that I like to do.  (i.e web browsing, video chat, watching copious amounts of porn, ect)  so I try doing those to see how well the OS works for me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mint will be lighter on resources, and it supports all the repositories available on Ubuntu but not Ubuntu's full app store.

Ubuntu has its app store, which will provide some extra exclusives.

Everything else is just differences of the desktop environments, which Mint and Ubuntu have multiple available to them. If you have the resources to run Unity smoothly, then it becomes almost entirely personal preference.

Mint 18 comes in MATE, Cinnamon, XFCE, and KDE flavors.

Ubuntu comes in Unity, Mate, and gnome, with unofficial builds that use XFCE (Xubuntu), LDE (Lubuntu), and KDE (Kubuntu). You can even switch to Cinnamon if you want.

I'll leave a link on how to convert Ubuntu to Cinnamon here:

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

I tried mint and didn't like it, all my computers run some either Ubuntu with Unity or Gnome.  Elementary OS is good too, and has the OSX look, but I usually just use the tweak tool to make it look how I want.

both of them are really good, I prefer Ubuntu, only because the security update seem to be a little more frequent. but they are both solid.
