Private Internet Access VPN

Ok so I have a weird issue going on. I pay for the privateinternetaccess VPN (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/) and it is installed and running. Whenever I search for my IP to check if it's working, (Example: Google: "what is my ip") the program is successful at masking my ip. But when I do a google search for "where am i" it locates me exactly where I am. So IP searches work and say I'm in New York for example but Googling where am I results in a map of where I actually am in NC. What am I missing here, and is this an indication that the VPN has not completely secured my connection?

VPN's are not fullproof. They may leak your actual IP address. This is because of your WebRTC. Browsers like firefox and comodo dragon can turn off leaking your actual IP address.

A menace to the scammer world. They hate me wasting their time when they are conning the innocent and giving to the idiots.

I am pretty sure that when you agree to share your location through google for example, what it will actually show is your nearest ISP link, but not positive on that. I just tried with mine, which is also PIA and mine comes out nowhere near my actual location.

Also, don't forget to flush your cache etc as there could be stuff that gives away your location more easily.

Best way to stay private on the net is use comodo dragon and settings untick the WebRTC box then restart or use firefox and type in the box about:config then click on the I'll promise to be good or something box then look for media.peerconnection.enabled. Toggle the box to be false then restart firefox. Once done then click on this link >>>
https://diafygi.github.io/webrtc-ips/

If it shows up blank then there is virtually no leaks from your vpn and browser.

Oh that makes sense. Didn't think about that. Sometimes it does it and other times it doesn't which is the other weird symptom.

I took a quick butchers at the site as I rarely use it. It was on about a chrome add-on... Shudders lol The last time I used add-on's for browsers to stop leaks, It played havoc with my browser and I kept loosing connection. I tend to steer people away from them as I tried it on a few computers and came to the same problem lol.

Ahh I see... I don't use chrome and wouldn't use an add-on, so not a problem for me... never even noticed it until you said about it, lol.

Have been using firefox and making changes to the config for about 12 years now, some of them are no longer needed because of firefox implementing them by default etc, but still good to know.

Update: When I sign out of Google (in any browser.) It still displays my actual location. I thought it must be somewhere in my permissions with my Google account. I use it for my android phone too so that would make sense that it has location permissions but not that it is able to see it with the VPN running. Is there a physical piece of hardware that runs a VPN that I can plug the modem into so it secures the entire connection to the house even before it hits my router? (I'm really not good with networking so this may be a really stupid question.)

PIA is cheap I think... https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/

$39.95 for the year right now... which works out just over $3.30 per month.

Ok thanks, there seems to be many things you can use these days.

So its basically a VPN service, and I assume thats a good one.

Yep, never had a problem with it really... of course there are going to be times when the server you're using either has too high traffic or something maybe, but no problem just disconnect and choose another server... I mostly only encounter this problem when I want to download something, I can see that it's not giving me enough bandwidth, takes a few seconds to switch servers and then I check again and most of the time it's fine. I have no problems maybe 90-95% of the time and I pretty much always use the VPN. Only times I can't use the VPN is when a secure site sometimes realises and doesn't let me do something, but it's very rare and no problem anyway, again choose another VPN server or if not absoloutely needed at the time, just disconnect briefly, finish your transaction/whatever and then connect to the VPN again.

5693752113.png

Above is what I get right now through the VPN server... my ISP is ebing a dick right now, thinking about swapping again soon. The fault lies with my ISP, not the VPN server, I'm only getting slightly more bandwidth than that from my ISP straight... approx 62Mbps ATM.
