New pc for my dad. Need help with the parts

ili199

Hey,

My dad really badly needs a new PC. Right now he is using a dying HP all-in-one witch is slow as sh*t.

As my dad used to work as an editor for the local tv station he has a lot of old video stuff. (Brandon would love to see it I think)

IMG_4696.JPG

Well I combined the two and decided to build a ITX pc in a old panasonic BT-h1450y witch isn't working correctly anymore.

I am planing to get the screen out of there and instal a cheap secondhand 15 LCD panel in it to make the big case a bit more use full by using it as a secondary screen (more just for the looks)

IMG_4697.JPG

These are the parts I am planing to buy/use:

- Pentium G3258 (I have one lying around so why not use it)

- MSI H81I ITX motherboard

- 1x8GB Kingston valueRAM 1600MHz (could always be upgraded to 16GB if needed)

- Kingston SSDNow UV400 240GB SSD (it isn't the fastest but it is cheap and better than a dying HDD)

- 2.5inch 640GB WD Blue (had it laying around so yeah why not)

- Be Quiet! SFX Power 2 400W PSU

As he uses a lot of Excel for his new job he would like a ultrawide monitor.

The LG 25UM58-P 2560x1080 ultrawide monitor

After a bit of digging I found out that the I-GPU on the pentium does not support this resolution. So he would also need a HDMI 2.0 capable GPU.

For this I am planing to get the Sapphire RX 460 2GB.

If there is any other way that would be a lot nicer because it is €120 more and he isnt gona use the power of the GPU anyway

So to summarize:

What do you guys thing about the parts? Any suggestions?

Do I really need the RX460 or is there a other (cheaper) way?

Thx for the help already

For the people who are interested:

I am planning to combine the new PC with a new custom desk.

The desk will be made out of old wood and have a size of about 80cm/180cm.

The two cabinets will be about 70cm high and support a 19 inch rack so all the tape recorders can be stored and used in there.

I hope to do a video or something like that. Maybe a build log on the forum?

i think that all these parts are a good choice, but maybe try to find something used (gpu) instead? i know he wont use the gpu power, buy you can find something cheaper and most likely more powerful that that 460 if you buy used.

I think an RX 460 would be fine for him as long as he doesn't plan to run crysis

Just buy a used gt 610 for like 5 euros, it's not great but it will work with 2560x1600. I doubt that he will be doing more than watching videos and use excel

This will work since you live in the Netherlands

And does he really need 8 gigs of ram?

He won't need a 240gb ssd, just buy him a 60 or 32gb one to put the Os on, way cheaper and it will hardly make a difference.

And if he goes with the gt 610 it will only require a 250w psu. The 400w psu will really help with energy efficiency.

Otherwise, great idea.

He could also just use a Intel Compute stick, it uses close to no energy and will work great for what he wants to do.

Just buy a gt 630 or something else that's under $50 new, you don't need a gaming GPU. Keep the 8GB though because 4 gigs of RAM nowadays is pretty bad for WIndows, especially if you use Chrome

Thx for the help!

I switched out the SSD with a 120gb one because he indeed doesn't need the 240gb.

I did keep the 8gb of RAM as he is a chrome user. https://giphy.com/gifs/google-experience-chrome-ojJsHKUFHRaAU ;)

For the GPU I found someone nearby who is selling a MSI GT740 2gb which will work fine as he (indeed) does not game.

I changed out the 400W PSU for the 300W version just to keep some headroom for upgrading to a i5.

As I said, Thanks for the help!

I'd recommend a motherboard with more USB I/O in the back(that MSI only has 4) since your custom case won't have USB front panels. For a few bucks extra, better to have it and not need it than the vice versa.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81N Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($67.99 @ Directron)

Also if $20 isn't too much, keep the 240gb SSD.

Storage: OCZ TRION 150 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($59.99 @ Newegg)

Great suggestion!

This Gigabyte board isn't available in Holland so I will use this ASRock board.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81M-ITX/

It only has 2 SATA 3 connections but that should be okay as were looking for a NAS for mass storage.
