So I really hate a lot of the anti virus crap out there, but I feel I could tread on icy waters avoiding anti virus programs all together. I've been using macs and therefore OSX for a long time until I built my gaming/animation rig.  As of now my build running windows 10 uses only the included malware protection. I animate with program which often leads me to download models from various places including annoying sites like mediafire, which is stuffed with pop up ads and the like. Any recommendations (No norton plz :|) for what- if anything- I should use?

And the wording in your title is very odd it should be "How do you keep a PC Secure" not "How do you keep a Secure PC" i get what you mean but its a little odd

Heh did some editing :P Also definitely heard of that before and will check it out- ty.

Avast Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes, Adblock Plus, Glasswire, Tor Browser and you should be good to go ^^. Also Tunnelbear on your phone!

Avast Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes, Adblock Android and you should also be good to go ^^, if you got an Android phone!

You could always get something like Kasperky or Bitdefender, but honestly i dont know if you value 90% real positive (virus, worms, trojans, malware, etc) over a 98% detection rating and a few extra real time and cleaning software utilities, for a significant price between 30-60€ for 1 year alone.

Keeping your pc secure tough is pretty easy, get a stainless steel case, get one with several dust filters and preferably, for someone that is modelling and not listening in stereo surround to CS:GO AWP 360 noscopes, a sound dampened material case. Watercooling over Aircooling anyday aswell! You already got a computer tough ^^, if you plan to get one on the future this is a solid way to maintain it clean and safe.

Oh yeah, also getting a reputable UPS or Power surge protector and high quality power supply are a must for a secure computer :).

And get an Ironkey USB drive if you value your artistic work, since those flashdrives cant be opened and will "boom" themselves if someone attempts to force break into them ^^.

I use ublock origin (firefox/chrome) but Opera has some good built-in stuff. And Comodo Internet Security for general protection (it's great, complete, and free), SUPERAntiSpyware for the tracking cookies you will get and already have, and Malwarebytes for anything serious just in case. :D

But you could probably do with just ublock and run all of your files through https://www.virustotal.com if you really wanted to go minimal. Still would recommend SAS though as a scanner.

Same idea but Ublock Origin, also I have my C drive separate from important things so I can wipe it whenever without issue if need be

MSE and Malwarebytes don't hurt to boot

I don't really want to get into the whole Tor Browser stuff. I'm not sure if I value that either lol....

I'm far from any sort of security expert, but I just use a lot of the OS built in features, as well as built-in browser features.

Avast, Avast Online Security, Windows Firewall, uBlock, and just the most discriminatory settings that only allow what I execute to run. In addition, little programs like Sandboxie or the use of controlled virtual environments to run unknown programs.

LAN, hidden SSID, pre-shared keys, MAC whitelisting, logging, ect.

I'd gotten by for the longest time with virtually no protection just by using smart browsing habits on an outdated and unprotected OS, too. I wouldn't recommend it, but I think it proves a decent enough point.

I use 360 Total Security for my AV solution, and it also comes with extra things as well like the Avira and Bitdefender AV engines(if you choose), along with cleaning utilities, and patching utilities.

I too have had very few run ins with true viruses in the past and I'm savvy enough to know I shouldn't click the "We have detected crap on your pc so please download our virus to get rid of your non virus" pop ups :P I do think that can be half the battle sometimes

  1. internet security - Dont download dogey shit + ad blocker

  3. Anti virus - Windows Defender cuz Microsoft keeps bugging me about it. . . .

Can that be used as an on demand scanner? :o

It runs in the background constantly, but you can do on-demand scanning with it through the context menu, as well as the program itself.

I meant does it have the options to disable real-time protection?
