Re-Planned Build aka (I've finally toned it down)

It is I - He Who Doesn't Listen.

Well how are we all today, LTT? Good I hope. As for me... A little sad.

It all started with me doing accounting(Math), and to my horror I had discovered that my chosen build with things like i7-6700K and 1080 GTX was totaling R30,500.00 ($2,230 USD)

and after some budgeting I would only be able to afford that in April 2017. Yeah... So with heavy heart I made some changes. (Prices, as always, are shown is South African Rand and US Dollar)

  • CPU: i7-6700k R6,000.00 ($438.93) -to- i5-6600k R4,300.00 ($314.56)
  • CPU Cooler: DeepCool Gammax 400 R445.00 ($32.55)
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming R3,775.00 ($276.16) -to- Asus Z170-A R3,100.00 ($226.78)
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 MHz 16GB (2 x 8GB) R1,400.00 ($102.42)
  • Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB R1,680.00 ($122.90)
  • Storage: Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda 3TB R1,770.00 ($129.48)
  • Graphics Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme R12,300.00 ($899.80) -to- Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme R8,400.00 ($614.50) -or- EVGA GeForce 1060 Superclocked R4,900.00 ($358.46)
  • Case: NZXT S340 R1,500 ($109.73)
  • PSU: SuperNova 650W G1 R1,600 ($117.05)

So there you have it, this build has saved me a total of R6,275.00 or 9,775.00 if I get the 1060. The purpose of this build is to be able to game on 1080p ultra at 60+  fps though I'd really prefer a minimum of 80 fps. One of the things I want to know is can I achive this with the 1060? And I mean 1080p ultra at 60+ fps on the most demanding of games/triple A titles.

The other part of this sudden downgrade of chosen parts is that I am tired of waiting for when I can get it, with this build I can get it latest end of November or earliest at the end of october if I get the 1060. The other reason is that I am tired and hate this POS laptop that I have no option but to deal with. This topic should have taken me 30 mins at the absolute most to type out, instead took me OVER THREE HOURS due to the damn constant slow-downs and freezes which can take up to and more than 30 mins to unscrew itself up. So yeah...

I was born in Vereenigin! My parents moved us out of SA in 1999, I’ve been back there a few times, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Anyway, I think the 1060 will be really solid at 1080p, but if you, for sure, want atleast 80fps then I would go for the gtx 1070. The gtx 1070 is a very good value. I think the gtx 1080 was a little a lot for what you want to be doing, so good choice there. Your power supply choice is good. You could go down to a 550 watt with no issues, but it is always good to have headroom and quality in that department.

If you are looking to cut some costs, maybe look at a less grade SSD. If you don’t mind your start up being a second or two slower then I think some other SSDs will be a great choice. Also a big saver would be your CPU. If you are just going to be gaming, strictly, then it could be a good idea to go with the i5 6600k. The 6700k is not all that different in general and would yield just about the exact same gaming performance. You could go even further than this and buy a non K CPU and get a cheaper motherboard. The one you have now, I think, is already a little expensive for simple overclocking. Finally, you may be paying a disproportionate amount for RAM. 3200MHz is nice, but I don’t think it is worth twice the price. For example, here in Texas, Id rather spend $120ish on 32GB of the lowest ddr4 frequency than over $130 for half the ram of high frequency, low timing ram.

My old and broken 1TB drive is filled to the brim. The 2TB and 3TB Seagate drives are only R 470 apart however there is a WD Blue drive that is R870 cheaper.

The cheapest RAM in SA I could find was again, G.Skill Ripjaws V 2400MHz, 15-15-15-35-2N.

The one I chose is the G.skill Ripjaws V 3200Mhz, 16-18-18-38-2N. All the the others 32GB kits and other 16GB kits are either the same or even more expensive. Between these two which would you choose? I will also look into a lower grade SSD.

Well it all depends on the price. When you plug the RAM in for the first time it will most likely run at the default 2133MHz and then you’d have to overclock it to wherever it is advertised. So, there is always a chance you may not even achieve the advertised frequency. Also you may be able to get the advertised frequency right after you first boot or even be able to overclock the ram beyond the advertised frequency.

With RAM what I did was find the cheapest 2 x 8GB combo that was a color I wanted and not too high of a profile so that it might interfere with my CPU cooler. RAM really inst too big of a deal as long as it a decently reputable brand. If you are a hardcore designer or video render then it would be wise to get at least 16GB or beyond.

In your situation I would go with your first, 2400MHz, suggestion unless the 3200 isn’t too far away price wise. Also, another thing to consider is just getting 8GB. 8GB is enough for 95% of people. Unless you are running certain programs related to creating content you will almost never need more than 8GB. 8GB is minimum and 16GB is recommended if you are building your own rig. I would still get 16Gb, but stick to 8GB if you are on a tight budget or literally only going to game on your machine.

In regards of the post after this, I wouldn't sell yourself short, it's good advice.I might just go with 8GB, I would like to think I'm a hardcore user and maybe one day I will be but to be honest I don't nearly do enough to warrant 16GB in that case, I've just got a problem with greed and enjoying sticking "Big Numbers" in my PC. Depending on the price of course. as with advertised speeds, well with the board supporting XMP 2.0 profiles it should do the trick with a quick tweek of the BIOS. But depending on which 8GB kit I get will see if this is necessary, however if I do get higher freq. then XMP should be fine and will also up my CPU clock a bit too, so there's that. But thanks for the good advice, all this stuff is cheaper in the USA though. Too bad for me, overseas ordering is not a viable solution for me.

Thanks :1 If you are ordering one stick of 8GB then it would probably be wise to get a high frequency, so if you ever do upgrade then that would be lowest denominator. Hey, I mailed some stuff to my uncles vineyard and the shipping was a almost a grand. For those prices, you might as well just go on vacation and bring some stuff home with you

Following your advice I've managed to drop the price from R24,195.00 to R21,835 however, if I can make the sacrifice of 1070 to a 1060 6GB then It'll be R17,835.00 which I can afford now. The question then becomes can I overclock it safely enough to make up for less CUDA Cores and slower clock speeds? Hmm, probably not that much, than again I might be told otherwise by people who know better than me.

How much cheaper is the RX 480? It doesn’t perform as well, but it is close and if it is a lot cheaper in SA, then I would say it is better than the 1060

The cheapest RX 480 8GB is R100 more than the 1060. That being said I'm looking into a MSI Z170A Tomahawk Motherboard which should save me R500 or so. Taking that into consideration I think I'll stick with the 1060, I am however biased towards Nvidia so...

Edit: In fact, I decided. 1060 6GB, Tomahawk. I think it'll preform just fine, a little OC maybe. I can always up my graphics and even mobo, ram etc later. Yes. This will do.

Thank you for all the help and showing me a cheaper but effective way.

Hey no problem. Glad my opinions  helped bounce some ideas around. I think the 1060 is an excellent choice for 1080p gaming. You really shouldn’t have any issues. People always say BUT it won’t do 60fps in every game, when they go and benchmark 30 games I will never buy.

From everything I have heard and learned in the last year I think Nvidia does know what they are doing, more so than AMD. Then again, I really wished AMD was more popular, because Nvidia would suck everyone dry if they had 0 competition. Nvidia said their graphics card will cost x upon release, I have yet to see them drop anywhere near what they originally advertised them as. At the moment most of their cards are like a hundred dollars above what they advertised and they have been out for a good number of months now.

Part of that issue I think is the demand being stupid high. The 1060 and 1070 full desktop versions can go in laptops now, which is apparently a big deal, so I think the demand price hike won’t go down for a while.

In the past ~4 months their shares on the NYSE have gone up about 50 points. Yet, in the last month they have been pretty steady in the low-mid $60/share area. I project they will stay around there for a while and then begin to drop before next years GPUs, then they skyrocket from there. Whilst for AMD their stocks have experienced virtually the same growth, if not more, while at the same time the last 10 months or so have been the most significant growth since 2009. Then, in the same breath for AMD their stocks were worth about 6 times as much early 2006. In the mean time Nvidias’ earnings are fairly decent while AMDs’ are actually kind of scary. So, the way I see it AMD is slowly dying. They are really going to have to pull off some magic with their Zen cpus... really they are going to have to all in and achieve greatness to survive another few years, in my opinion.

Hello again, I've decided to update this thread instead of irking the admins and make a new thread here. I done some more swapping and changing and have finally decided on a build. In other words I am in the process of actually buying it. It's literately the best I can afford. The prices in USD are not reflective of the prices in ZAR on PC Part Picker, and oh boy I wish it were, I could do so much more if it were but oh well, I dealt with what I had and like to think I didn't to too badly.

What do you guys think of my final build, well it's not my first and I have said before it is the most research I have ever done. I didn't just look as prices I asked many questions so I could learn. And I still feel so overwhelmed. I also want to say thank you on everyone who has assisted me on my journey and even those whom just gave it a read. It's nice to grab people interest.

I also as a curiosity wanted to know what people would reckon (Or know) what kind of performance (in fps) I'd get on ultra on the most demanding of titles with a 1080p at 144Hz vs. 1440p at 144Hz. Just for fun.
